The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a Boat Dock Maintenance Student at the Chatham  Boat Docks. This position will start approximately May 11, 2026, for a period up to August 28, 2026.

Job description

The Boat Dock Maintenance Student will assist staff with improving and beautifying the downtown boat dock areas.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
  • Maintain a high level of customer service to boaters, dock users and tourists on area attractions, services, and special events
  • Answer questions about events, attractions, and services
  • Assist in preparations for special events being held in the downtown area
  • Communicate with Special Event Coordinators to ensure events run smoothly
  • Maintain the dock office
  • Maintain an aesthetically pleasing boat dock area, maintaining the promenade, cleaning washroom and showers, including weeding, painting, collection of garbage and other maintenance duties
  • Complete daily checklist of duties
  • Notify Supervisor immediately of vandalism, maintenance and/or public concerns
  • Work cooperatively with other summer positions
  • Work outdoors, with occasional weekend hours

Essential qualifications

  • To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2025/2026 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2026 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
  • Currently in grade 12 or higher or current enrolment in a post-secondary Marketing or Tourism program preferred
  • Experience working at a marina or boating facility preferred
  • Maintenance experience in a business environment
  • Experience providing customer service in a business environment
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills
  • Working knowledge of small equipment preferred
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • First Aid/CPR an asset
  • Swimming certification an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works outdoors
  • This position works weekday hours, with occasional weekend hours

Driver's licence/vehicle requirements

Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G or G2 Ontario driver's licence; a driver's abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver's abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no 'non-medical or administrative' licence suspension in the preceding three (3) years.

Background check requirements

Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Because of the responsibilities of this position, students need to be physically fit, and enjoy working outdoors
  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface (sidewalks, grass areas, promenade)
  • Foot action: frequent one and two foot action (walking, driving)

Benefits
This Boat Dock Maintenance Student position has an hourly wage rate of $17.60 to $18.00 and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
