Marine Industry Career Path: Greg Smith
Overview Full Name: Greg Smith School: Georgian College – Midland Campus Graduating Year: 2013 Current Workplace: Marina Del Rey, Orillia, ON Greg is an Ontario resident who, after graduating in 2013, now instructs part-time for the same marine program he graduated from and serves as lead Technician at Marina Del Rey. He is also a part-time instructor at Georgian College, sharing his experience with students and emphasizing the value of getting your foot in the door and doing what you love. Career background Greg got into boating at 19 when a family friend who worked at a boat manufacturer mentioned they could use extra help. He started with carpentry and small jobs, gaining experience in building boats from the mold up. He later moved north and started the Marine Engine Program at Georgian College. Path after graduation After graduation, Georgian College arranged a co-op placement at Marina Del Rey, and he has remained there ever since. He is currently the lead Technician at the marina, with responsibilities including haul-out and equipment maintenance. Instructing I’m currently a part-time instructor at the Midland campus for Georgian College. I mainly teach the apprentices things like sterndrive propulsion, AC and DC electrical systems, and Outboard EFI Systems. Industry perspective The boating industry is constantly evolving, and the Midland campus staff keep up with the times. Instructors have years of on-the-job experience, and many still work on boats when they aren’t teaching. The marine program is updated to introduce new equipment and techniques. Students come from diverse backgrounds and are eager to start working. The Midland campus is in Ontario’s cottage and boating country, which helps connect education to practical work. Industry changes The technology on boats has advanced significantly in the past years. The digital age is making its way into every system on board. Environmental considerations are guiding engine manufacturing and chemical production, with more Green fluids and stricter emission requirements. Program highlights The instructors are knowledgeable and helpful, and the co-op placement at the end of the program provides a strong pathway to employment. The hands-on experience in the program helps students get their foot in the door. Advice As with any job, there are difficult days. We work outside in the elements and in tight spaces. Hopefully you aren’t afraid of spiders. At the end of the day, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Fond memory Most memories involve the water. I proposed to my fiancé on a dock next to our boat during a weekend trip with my brother and his wife. That moment was really special. #J-18808-Ljbffr
