CBC New Brunswick is looking for an energetic and enterprising Associate Producer to join the Information Morning Saint John radio program team.  This position strikes a balance for that person who takes as much pride in their journalism as they do in taking the show live to air as the technician.

You will start your weekday by connecting with the host and mounting a live radio show.  You will operate the console and troubleshoot if something is amiss, making sure everything rolls out smoothly and sounds great.  You will also go live into the program, providing various updates and bantering with the host.  All of this requires you to be calm and level-headed in a high-paced, early morning environment and to be comfortable with live programming, both in front of and behind the microphone.

Following the live program you will connect with the rest of the programming team and your newsroom colleagues.  You will participate in discussion about the program, the news of the day, story follows, events happening in the region, and you will pitch original story ideas.  With appropriate direction from one or more producers, you will then assist with pre-tapes, chase guests, prepare interview scripts, produce audio-rich paks, and participate in the development of regular features and program segments.  This requires you to be a team player who works well with different people and is ready to jump in as needed as well as being able to work independently to deliver high quality results with tight deadlines.

This role is part of a multi-platform newsroom team spread over multiple locations in New Brunswick.  While you are focused on ensuring a great experience for the listeners of Information Morning Saint John, you are equally committed to the public service journalism and programming delivered on all CBC platforms.  This means you are comfortable leveraging a variety of storytelling tools and techniques, and adapting to evolving technologies.

In addition to the skills and experience you bring to the role, you appreciate different perspectives and experiences and understand the importance of diversity and inclusion.  You are also committed to practicing and promoting the values of a respectful work culture.

This is a full-time permanent role, Monday to Friday, , on site in Saint John, NB.

Key tasks:

● Engineer and direct the program, live or recorded, in the studio or remote location ensuring excellence in audio quality.

● Troubleshoot and solve problems that arise during live broadcasts

● Ensure that equipment, facilities, program sources and personnel are available to meet operational and program requirements.

● Set up and operate equipment to meet program and production goals.

● Play a key role in programming music, sound effects and/or actuality that fits the mandate of the show.

● Pitch and produce story ideas and program content. This may involve chasing, gathering and editing sound-rich audio, researching, and/or writing current affairs interview scripts.

● Present on-air as needed for the role.

● Obtain studio crews, lines and other technical and/or production resources required by the program on behalf of producers and freelancers.

● Strong organizational skills; ability to perform a number of functions efficiently and

quickly.

● Availability to work flexible hours, work overtime and travel as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

● University degree or equivalent

● Job requires two years experience including work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to editorial chase or technical operations

● Strong background in live and live-to-tape radio broadcast engineering.

● Solid journalistic skills

● Excellent production skills

● Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts.

● Ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently, and meet deadlines

● Innovative, flexible, calm under pressure, able to make quick decisions in a live radio environment as needed

● Takes direction well, works co-operatively but also a self-starter.

● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

● Comfortable interacting and presenting material live on-air

● Innovative, with proven ability to use sound creatively

● Open to new ideas and approaches

● Strong organizational skills

● An understanding that you are working for a journalistic organization, which requires flexibility in shifts including early mornings, evening and weekend work.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
