Research & Development Engineer (EIT) – Fenestration Systems

The R&D Engineer EIT plays a critical role in developing, testing, and implementing new fenestration products and technologies. This position combines deep technical knowledge with creativity and practical engineering to enhance product performance, energy efficiency, manufacturability, and aesthetics. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring innovative window and door solutions from concept to production.

Key responsibilities:

Product Innovation & Development

  • Design and develop new window and door systems using aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass, and hybrid materials.
  • Research and implement new technologies in glazing, thermal performance, and hardware integration.
  • Create and validate prototypes through testing, modeling, and performance evaluations.
  • Conduct competitive product benchmarking and identify opportunities for innovation.

Engineering Analysis & Testing

  • Perform structural, thermal, and air-water infiltration simulations and testing.
  • Work with internal testing facilities and third-party labs to meet CSA, AAMA, and NFRC standards.
  • Analyze test data to refine designs and ensure compliance with performance criteria and building codes.
  • Maintain depth of knowledge of requirements set by standards and codes above, and proactively anticipate or prepare for changes to such requirements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Product Management, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to ensure design feasibility and efficiency.
  • Support suppliers and fabricators in the implementation of new materials or assembly methods.
  • Prepare technical documentation, drawings, and engineering reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead cost-reduction initiatives through design optimization and material innovation.
  • Support automation and process improvement projects in manufacturing related to product design.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and sustainability initiatives in fenestration.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field.
  • 0+ years of experience in product design or development, preferably in the fenestration, building envelope, or construction products industry.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar).
  • Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is an asset.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of thermal and structural performance principles for fenestration systems.
  • Familiarity with CSA/AAMA/NFRC standards and certification processes is an asset.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Analytical mindset with foundational root-cause understanding.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
