The Team Lead, Payroll will oversee payroll operations for both Canadian and U.S. employees, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with legislation and internal policies. The role includes team management, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement of payroll systems and processes.

This position will be based at the Calgary Head Office location and reports to the Manager, HR Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Responsible for managing workloads and supporting payroll team members to ensure payroll accuracy and efficient processing. Oversees the end-to-end payroll processing for both Canadian and U.S. employees, ensuring full compliance with federal, provincial, and state legislation. Designing schedules that support compliance, auditing payroll processes, policies, and controls to ensure accuracy and data integrity, and staying informed of legislative changes that may impact payroll.Approves payroll runs and ensure timely remittances and reconciliations.Acts as a contact for internal and external payroll audits. Collaborates with HR, Finance, and operational leaders to resolve issues and improve service delivery. Maintain payroll and IT controls related to HR data access and compliance, particularly within the ADP system. Ensures the secure handling of electronic filing of employee data in compliance with privacy regulations.Provides payroll data and insights to support budgeting, Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) reporting, vacation and overtime tracking, and payroll dashboards. Designs and maintains reports that support decision-making across departments.Assists with improvements to payroll workflows and system configurations, including platforms such as ADP and GNA. Troubleshoots payroll and HR data issues, actively communicates across teams, and assists with payroll-related projects such as process changes, and policy rollouts. Ensures process documentation is up-to-date and supports cross-training among team members.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field is preferred.A minimum of 10 years of experience in payroll operations, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or team lead role.Payroll Leadership Professional designation (formerly Certified Payroll Manager Certification) is required. Proficiency in payroll systems (e.g. ADP).Expertise in full-cycle payroll processing for Canadian and U.S. employees. Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation and adherence to compliance requirements.Maintaining knowledge of legislative changes through ongoing professional development, such as seminars through the National Payroll Institute.Demonstrated ability to minimize compliance risk through accurate reporting.Strong knowledge of ERP systems and their integrations. Understanding of HR operations, including data maintenance and IT interfaces for onboarding and offboarding. Familiarity with ServiceNow workflows and experience with year-end payroll processing, audits and reconciliations. Ability to create orientation and training materials using PowerPoint. Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in HRIS systems are required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Effective communication and collaboration skills.Formalized leadership training is considered an asset.
