Nestled within the beautiful Rocky and Purcell Mountains, in the southeast corner of British Columbia, the East Kootenay region is a four-season destination. The region boasts unlimited year-round outdoor recreation including skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, golfing, boating, hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, mountaineering, white-water rafting, and snowmobiling. The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) serves over 60,000 permanent residents and approximately 25,000 to 30,000 seasonal residents. The region is diverse, home to several unincorporated communities, eight municipalities, and four First Nations communities.
Under the supervision of the Engineering Services Manager, the Engineering Technician performs complex technical work to facilitate the design, construction and maintenance of utility, flood mitigation, and water resource projects and infrastructure. The Engineering Technician supports asset management development and maintenance at the RDEK.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Two year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related technical field
- Three years Engineering Technician Experience
- Eligibility for membership in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC.
- Asset Management Planning Certificate, or similar
- EOCP Small Water System certificate.
- EOCP Small Wastewater System certificate.
- Maintains continuing education units for all certificates.
- BC Driver's Licence.

- Computer literate with experience in land management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Coordinate projects involving multiple departments and agencies.
- Engage with fellow employees, the public and outside agencies in a courteous manner.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Experience with budget preparation and management.
- Knowledge of emergency response and recovery planning and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of engineering principles related to the design and construction of storm drainage, sanitary sewer, water and other utility systems.
- Knowledge of small water systems materials, tools and equipment.
- Maintain composure and find solutions when dealing with difficult customers.
- Prepare clear and concise reports.
- Presentation skills.
- Troubleshooting ability.
- Work safely
This is a permanent, full-time (35 hours per week) Union position with a starting hourly rate of $44.60/hour with an increase to $46.82/hour after a successful 6-month probation period, as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
