The Wabanaki Two-Spirit Alliance (W2SA) is hiring a dynamic and forward-thinking Indigenous /Two-Spirit Coordinator to oversee and enhance W2SA policy development.
The Policy Coordinator will collaborate with the Executive Director and other staff to meet the goals of the W2SA in the region.

Position Overview:
The 2S+ Policy Development Coordinator is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and initiatives that promote the rights, safety, and inclusion of 2S+ individuals. This role involves engaging with Indigenous communities, organizations, and government bodies to advocate for culturally responsive and equity-driven policies. The coordinator will also collaborate with team members to ensure W2SA organizational practices and policies reflect the principles of decolonization, inclusion, and intersectional equity.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Policy Development and Advocacy:
- Research, develop, and recommend policies that address the unique needs of 2S+ individuals, including areas such as housing, health, education, justice and employment.
- Ensure policies are culturally grounded, trauma-informed, and reflective of 2S+ knowledge systems and teachings.
- Monitor and analyze local, provincial, and federal policies impacting 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals and communities.
- Advocate for systemic policy changes that advance the rights and well-being of Indigenous 2S+ people.
2. Community Engagement and Relationship Building:
- Establish relationships with and engage Indigenous knowledge keepers, Elders, and community leaders to promote, support and remove barriers for 2S+ individuals.
- Engage 2S+ community to gather insights and lived experiences to inform policy development.
- Ensure policies are co-created with 2SLGBTQQIA+ voices at the forefront.
- Act as a liaison between W2SA and community partners, government agencies, and advocacy groups.
3. Program and Initiative Coordination:
- Support the implementation of 2SLGBTQQIA+ programs, services, and initiatives aligned with policy goals.
- Collaborate with team members to incorporate inclusive practices and policies into W2SA organizational programming.
- Identify funding opportunities and assist with grant applications to support policy and program development.
4. Capacity Building:
- Work with the Executive Director and other W2SA staff and volunteers to develop policies and procedures for the organization which reflect the principles of decolonization, inclusion, and intersectional equity.
- Deliver workshops, presentations, and training sessions on 2SLGBTQQIA+ policy issues.
- Develop educational resources, toolkits, and reports to raise awareness and promote best practices.
- Support capacity building efforts for staff, partners, and community organizations.
5. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
- Develop and implement frameworks to assess the effectiveness of policies and initiatives.
- Collect and analyze data to measure impact, identify gaps, and recommend improvements.
- Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
Required:
- Lived experience as a 2S+ person or with a demonstrated knowledge of the intersectional experiences of 2S+ communities.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in policy development, advocacy, program coordination, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous governance, rights, and self-determination frameworks.
- Knowledge of 2S+ rights, issues, and policies, including intersectional experiences of Indigenous individuals.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, Elders, and knowledge keepers in a respectful and culturally safe manner.
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Strong communication and facilitation abilities.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision while meeting to project deadlines and development of deliverables.
Assets (Preferred):
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, or a related field.
- Experience in grant writing, funding proposals, or policy advocacy a plus.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed, decolonial, and harm-reduction approaches.
- Knowledge of Indigenous languages and cultural practices a plus.

- Cultural Competency: Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, teachings, and protocols, with a commitment to cultural safety and humility.
- Collaboration and Relationship Building: Ability to build and sustain respectful and meaningful relationships with diverse Indigenous 2S+ communities.
- Policy Analysis and Development: Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop and evaluate inclusive policies.
- Advocacy and Influence: Ability to influence policy change and advocate for Indigenous 2S+ rights.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to diverse audiences.
- Organization and Time Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Working Conditions:
- Will involve travel to Indigenous communities and events in the Wabanaki region.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for community engagement activities.
- Hybrid or remote work arrangements may be available
