Position Description

Researchers at the Hospital For Sick Children are seeking an enthusiastic researcher to help co-develop and implement a research program aimed at improving the surgical care of children with cancer. In this position, you will work closely with surgeons and other clinicians at SickKids who are involved in the care of cancer patients. The pillars of the research program are centred on 1) understanding and improving patient-centred care, 2) studying health systems and improving health equity worldwide, and 3) understanding and improving clinical outcomes. The ideal candidate will have a PhD or a Master's level education as well as experience in health-related research. They will bring a skill-set in research methodlogies that complement the clinical team as well as an interest in continuing to expand and build upon their own expertise. Research experience with a broad set of methodologies (i.e. qualitative analysis, mixed-methods research, survey design, database development, or decision analysis) would be welcomed. Project management experience is also welcomed. While not required, experience working with or in health systems in various countries, including in low- and middle-income countries is a plus. The successful candidate will work independently in close collaboration with the Principle Investigators to develop study methodology, collect and analyze data, and apply for external funding.

The position will be offered at the level of Research Associate or Research Fellow based on the successful candidate's experience. A hybrid work environment may be supported with some expectation for in-person work each week.

Here's What You'll Get To Do

  • Demonstrate scientific creativity and/or knowledge in a particular field
  • Independently design and implement research projects which include the analysis of feasibility and application of a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts
  • Plan, organize and carry out laboratory research
  • Remain current on research of current principles and theories
  • Participate in the development of patent applications
  • Independently determine new data required to develop a paper
  • Arrange publication of articles in international journals and publications
  • Design lay-out and prepare peer reviewed scientific manuscripts and grant proposals
  • Apply highly advanced knowledge of innovative research principles, theories and concepts
  • Contribute to the development of new principles and concepts
  • Provide leadership and supervision within the research group on scientific matters
  • Supervise and mentor trainees and technologists
  • Provide a continuity of research
  • Assist the PI in ensuring fiscal safety and legislative responsibilities are maintained
  • Assume responsibility for interpreting assignments, planning a series of experiments, correlating data, evaluating results, and preparing reports embodying pertinent hypotheses, assumptions, procedures and findings
  • Independently design and/or create new techniques, procedures and practices
  • Participate in ad hoc committees within the Research Institute
  • Perform in-depth analyses of a range of extremely complex problems requiring evaluation of multiple intangible variables and alternative solutions
  • Exercise extensive independent judgement, initiative and decision making to resolve problems
  • Revise existing and/or develop new methods and evaluation criteria for problem analysis and resolution
  • Develop guidelines, procedures and standards; monitor for industry compliance
  • Serve as the spokesperson and authority for internal and external contacts on a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts
  • Develop and present material for publication using strong written, verbal, and graphical communications skills with the ability to express highly complex scientific concepts effectively
  • Present scientific outcomes to the department, members of the research community and international conferences
  • Assist the PI in preparing reviews of others' grant application and manuscripts as appropriate
  • Lead and develop private sector collaborations
