Position Overview
In this role, you will manage the full cycle of payroll operations and administer the company's benefits programs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation, a high level of attention to detail, and a service-oriented approach when supporting employees and managers. This role will also play a key part in enhancing payroll system efficiency, supporting the ongoing implementation and optimization of new system modules.
Responsibilities
- Process bi-weekly payroll for hourly, and salaried employees in compliance with federal and provincial regulations in a unionized environment
- Maintain and review employee timecards to ensure accuracy prior to payroll processing
- Calculate, verify, and process statutory deductions, garnishments, and remittances (CRA, WCB, and other agencies)
- Prepare and distribute year-end documentation, including T4s, and process Records of Employment (ROEs) as required
- Administer all aspects of the company's employee benefits programs, including group health, dental, life insurance, disability, and pension plans
- Manage employee benefits administration for new hires and ongoing employee changes, while serving as a key point of contact for payroll, compensation, and benefits inquiries
- Serve as the primary resource for the payroll system, supporting system enhancements, new module rollouts, and troubleshooting activities
- Generate, analyze, and distribute regular and ad-hoc payroll and benefits reports to support internal stakeholders and business decision-making
- Partner with HR and internal stakeholders to support system updates, testing, and process enhancements
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, workflows, and system efficiency, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
- Support continuous improvement by training managers on payroll system enhancements, new functionality, and efficient system usage
- Maintain strict confidentiality and ensure compliance with company policies and legislative requirements
Education & Qualifications
- Minimum three (3) years of experience administering payroll in a Canadian environment
- Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation or actively working toward completion
- Proficiency with payroll/HRIS systems and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word)
- Strong systems aptitude, with experience learning, supporting, and troubleshooting payroll or HRIS systems
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple or shifting priorities and meet firm deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain payroll or system-related issues clearly and professionally
- Strong relationship-building skills with a guest-focused approach
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment
- High level of confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
