Protection and Controls Design Engineer

The Engineer is a professional engineer or geoscientist who applies engineering knowledge to provide engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium-complexity projects and/or operations. This role delivers work safely, with quality, within budget, and on schedule.
What You Will Be Doing
- Design protection and control systems for electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 12 kV to 500 kV, with demonstrated experience in utility P&C design solutions and electric utility environments.
- Perform engineering work focused on protection and control systems used in transmission stations operating from 12 kV to 500 kV.
- Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with applicable project requirements and engineering design practices, including evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design bases, calculations, hazard logs, and test plans.
- Develop design work packages, including scope definition, duration, and level-of-effort estimates.
- Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as the Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) requirements and established design practices.
- Provide technical assistance, construction support, and field reviews as required by EGBC.
- Prepare detailed designs and documentation for protection and control systems in substations in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
- Produce detailed design packages such as equipment layouts, single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematic diagrams, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, material lists, and external connections, ready for issue and archiving within the drawing management system.
- Specify and procure materials, panel assemblies, and related equipment.
- Prepare condition assessment reports for facility equipment and systems, including analysis and recommendations to address identified deficiencies.
- Develop commissioning test plans and commissioning requirements documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and review of designs prepared by others in accordance with established practices.
- Deliver training to end users and peers on the theory, operation, and use of installed or modified equipment and systems.
- Develop safe engineering solutions by applying initiative and judgment to analyze problems, interpret engineering specifications, and resolve medium-complexity engineering challenges.
- Support project and operations management in meeting safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives, including recommending plan changes, validating contractor payments, preparing progress reports, and coordinating work schedules.
- Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems through independent study and analysis, exercising professional judgment to recommend safe and effective engineering solutions.
- Contribute to the engineering practice by supporting the development of technical standards, providing guidance to other engineering professionals, and helping build future engineering capability.
Important Notes
- Prior to commencing the assignment, the selected candidate must have their own sole practitioner Permit to Practice or access to their firm's Permit to Practice with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
- Registrants will work under an established Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management framework.
- Engineering deliverables sealed by the Registrant must include the Registrant's own or their firm's Permit to Practice number.
- All project documentation produced during the assignment will be retained to satisfy EGBC bylaw requirements.
What You Need to Have
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, or eligibility for registration through another jurisdiction
- Ability to use digital signing and sealing technology (e.g., Notarius or equivalent)
- Intermediate English proficiency for a professional environment (written and spoken)
- Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards
- Ability to use standard industry design and analysis software
- Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
