Back-End Developer – Fintech / Payroll Systems (Full-Time, Waterloo, ON)

About Swift Wellness

Swift Wellness is a Waterloo-based financial wellness startup helping Canadian employees access their earned wages instantly and stress-free.

By integrating directly with employers' payroll systems, we're redefining how workers achieve financial flexibility — eliminating payday loan dependency and empowering financial wellness across the workforce.

We've completed our Early Adoption Program with employers in Ontario and Alberta, are growing rapidly, and are now expanding our engineering team at our
Waterloo and new Toronto
office.

The Role

We're looking for a
Back-End Developer
to join our core product team and help scale our paycheque-advance and financial-wellness platform.

You'll work directly with our
CTO, Hanru Xu
, and co-founders to build the infrastructure powering secure transactions, payroll integrations, and financial analytics.

You will:

  • Design, build, and maintain APIs and backend services for Swift Wellness's core platform.
  • Integrate with third-party systems such as payroll providers (e.g., Payworks, ADP, Ceridian) and payment platforms (e.g., Stripe, Plaid).
  • Ensure data privacy, reliability, and scalability across multiple employer integrations.
  • Develop and maintain database architecture (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or equivalent).
  • Collaborate with front-end engineers to deliver new product features and improve performance.
  • Implement testing, monitoring, and DevOps workflows for stable deployment.
  • Work closely with leadership to translate business needs into technical solutions.

What We're Looking For

  • 2–5 years of backend or full-stack development experience (start-up or SaaS environment preferred).
  • Strong experience with
    / TypeScript / Express
    (Python or Java accepted if open to transition).
  • Familiarity with
    SQL databases
    ,
    API design
    , and
    cloud deployment (AWS / GCP)
    .
  • Understanding of
    payment systems, payroll, or fintech integrations
    is a major plus.
  • Comfortable working in an early-stage environment — resourceful, curious, and hands-on.
  • Bonus: experience with
    security, encryption, or data-privacy compliance
    (SOC 2, PIPEDA).
