Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Johnson Controls Full time $118,000 - $170,000

Position Summary

Silent-Aire, a rapidly growing manufacturing company dedicated to the global data centre market, is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior Electrical Engineering Manager to lead our North American electrical engineering team. This role is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and implementation of electrical systems and components – ensuring technical excellence, innovation, and scalability for high-volume production (1,000+ units/year) in alignment with business goals. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in electrical engineering leadership and cross-functional collaboration. They excel at balancing customer-centric, high-performance solutions for hyperscale and colocation data centre clients with modular, standardized design practices that enable repeatable designs and efficient manufacturing at scale. Experience with product-oriented development (for example, configurable complex equipment designs – Automotive, Appliance, etc.) is highly valuable in this role, as we pivot from one-off designs to a product platform approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and Mentor Team: Lead and mentor a growing team of 8 electrical professionals (Drafters, Designers, and Engineers). Foster a culture of continuous improvement, strategic planning, team building, and professional development.

  • Project & Resource Management: Oversee the planning, design, and execution of electrical engineering projects across North America, including managing timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to meet project and production targets.

  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (NEC, NBC, UL1995, UL , UL62368-1, UL2755, UL508A) and enforce "Safety in Design" principles across all engineering work.

  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance to the team, resolve complex engineering challenges, and take professional responsibility for the electrical aspects of our products and project designs.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate cross-functionally with Clients, Account Leads, Project Managers, as well as Mechanical, Structural, Controls, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Product Design, Operations, Quality, and Service teams. Ensure electrical designs integrate seamlessly with other disciplines and transition smoothly from design to production.

  • Innovative Product Design: Drive innovation in electrical product design and system integration for Silent-Aire solutions (including Air Handling Units, Modular Data Centres, Cooling Distribution Units, and Chiller Pump Skids). Incorporate new technologies and approaches that improve performance and reliability of our offerings.

  • Modular & Standardized Design: Champion modularization and standardization initiatives. Develop standard electrical modules and design templates – for example, common power distribution panel layouts, standard wire harnesses and pin-out configurations, and repeatable control system designs. These standards will be used across multiple products/projects to increase design reuse and manufacturing efficiency.

  • Design for Manufacturability: Integrate Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Assembly (DFA) principles into the engineering process. Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering to optimize designs for efficient assembly and commissioning at scale – e.g. simplifying wiring layouts, reducing unique part variations, and ensuring components are easily accessible for assembly and maintenance. This role will ensure that designs can be built reliably and cost-effectively at volumes of 1,000+ units per year.

  • Client Requirements Translation: Translate client and consultant inputs – whether fully detailed or high-level – into effective, innovative product solutions. Balance custom requirements with standardized design elements to meet client needs while maintaining consistency and quality in our product lines.

  • Business Development Support: Support Business Development and Sales teams with technical input, feasibility assessments, and scope definitions for new opportunities. Provide expertise during proposal development to ensure our solutions are competitive and achievable.

  • Documentation & Communication: Prepare and present technical proposals, design reviews, reports, and findings to internal stakeholders and external clients. Clearly communicate design intent, changes, and benefits, both in written form and presentations.

  • Continuous Improvement Initiatives: Participate in and lead engineering improvement initiatives such as DFMEA exercises, Gemba walks, "Tiger Team" task forces, and issue resolution processes. Use these opportunities to identify design and process improvements.

  • Process & Standards Development: Develop and enhance engineering department processes, policies, and standards. Keep the team's design practices current with industry best practices. Continuously improve our internal standards to increase efficiency, such as refining CAD libraries, establishing an electrical design standards repository, and implementing lessons learned from past projects into standard practice.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering (or related discipline). Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is preferred (or eligibility to obtain).

  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, including at least 5 years in a leadership or management capacity. Demonstrated success in managing engineering teams and delivering complex, high-impact projects or products.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in electrical design tools and simulation software, and well-versed in industry standards and regulatory codes. Strong background in power distribution and electrical power systems is required. Experience in electrical panel design and wire harness design is essential.

  • Product Development Exposure: Experience working in a high-volume manufacturing or product development environment is highly desirable. Exposure to designing electrical equipment or control systems that are produced in large quantities (as opposed to solely custom projects) will be a strong asset.

  • Standardization & DFM/DFA: Proven ability to implement design standardization or modular design principles in previous roles. Familiarity with design for manufacturability considerations — designing products that are efficient to assemble and scale up — is a plus.

  • Leadership & Communication: Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational abilities. Proven strategic planning skills with the ability to set technical direction, develop team talent, and mentor engineers. Capable of building relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.

  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to troubleshoot complex electrical issues and guide the team through technical challenges to reach practical solutions.

Preferred Skills & Attributes

  • Data Centre & Infrastructure Knowledge: Experience in data centre power/cooling technologies and mission-critical infrastructure is an advantage. Understanding the unique requirements of hyperscale and colocation data centre environments helps contextualize design decisions.

  • Project Management: Familiarity with project management methodologies (e.g., Agile frameworks or PMP certification) to effectively manage projects and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Lean/Continuous Improvement: Knowledge of Lean engineering or Six Sigma methodologies and continuous improvement techniques. Experience with DFMEA (Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis) and other quality/process improvement tools is beneficial.

  • Industry Experience: Background working with or within large OEMs or industrial manufacturers known for standardized electrical products is a plus. Experience with rigorous standardization and modular design that are part of the engineering culture – would be considered an asset.

  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities. Flexible and creative in approach, with a strong customer focus and a drive to deliver innovative solutions under tight timelines.

  • Passion & Initiative: High energy and proactive attitude. Passionate about staying current with emerging technologies and finding ways to integrate them into product designs. A positive approach to challenges and the motivation to take initiative in improving products and processes.
