Senior Azure Cloud Engineer

Markham, Ontario, Canada Xplore Inc. Full time

Position Overview:*

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Azure Cloud Engineer to design, build, secure, and operate scalable Microsoft Azure platforms. This role blends technical leadership, cloud architecture ownership, and cross functional collaboration to modernize workloads, lead migrations, and raise platform engineering maturity across subscriptions and landing zones.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Architect and deliver secure, highly available Azure solutions including VMs, AKS, App Services, and serverless patterns.
  • Design and maintain enterprise landing zones, subscription structure, and network topology to support scale and governance.
  • Lead migrations from on premises and other cloud providers: assess, plan, create runbooks, execute cutovers, and validate outcomes.
  • Automate infrastructure using IaC (Terraform, Bicep, ARM), and build CI/CD pipelines with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
  • Operate production platforms with ownership for monitoring, alerting, incident response, capacity planning, and post incident RCA.
  • Enforce security and governance through Azure AD, RBAC, Key Vault, network segmentation, encryption, policies, and compliance controls.
  • Optimize cost and performance across subscriptions and resource groups through tagging, rightsizing, and cost management practices.
  • Coach and mentor platform engineers, lead architecture reviews, define standards, and maintain clear documentation and runbooks.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 7+ years of cloud engineering experience with recent, deep experience in Microsoft Azure.
  • Proven IaC skills with Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates and scripting experience in PowerShell and/or Python.
  • Container and CI/CD expertise with AKS/Kubernetes, pipeline automation, and observability tools such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Prometheus, or Grafana.
  • Strong networking and security knowledge including Azure AD, RBAC, NSGs, Azure Firewall, and network design principles.
  • Operational experience troubleshooting production incidents and conducting root cause analysis.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Azure certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure DevOps Engineer.
  • Enterprise governance experience with management groups, policies, blueprints, and cost management.
  • Platform engineering with emphasis on runbook automation and reliability engineering.
  • Familiarity with data and integration services such as Mulesoft, Azure Databricks, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Event Grid, and Service Bus.

What Success Looks Like

  • Landing zones and subscription architecture that meet security and compliance targets while enabling developer velocity.
  • Smooth, low risk migrations with documented runbooks and measurable performance improvements.
  • Reduced incident frequency and mean time to recovery through automation, observability, and runbook maturity.
  • A stronger platform engineering team through mentoring, clear standards, and repeatable patterns.
