CBC North
is looking for an experienced journalist with exceptional editing and critical thinking skills to join our digital team as a senior writer based in Yellowknife.

Assigned to the weekend web shift, this position will report to the senior digital producer. The successful candidate will ensure the accurate and efficient delivery of content to
CBC North's
website. You will write and edit copy, craft sharp headlines that engage our readers and package multimedia content to enrich the audience experience.

The shifts for this position are from Thursday to Monday.
Your role
You have keen news judgment, high standards and pay close attention to detail. You are comfortable making independent editorial decisions in accordance with the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You work closely with reporters to develop their stories and ensure they meet high editorial standards and CBC's principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.

You have an interest in the North and its communities, culture, languages and diversity. You put audience needs at the centre of your work, helping to ensure our news content reflects our communities.

Your responsibilities:

  • You take the lead on breaking news, in collaboration with the senior digital producer.
  • You write stories from reporters' material and Current Affairs interviews as needed.
  • You vet, copy edit, fact check, package and publish stories, working with writers to make sure our digital stories meet high editorial standards.
  • You provide feedback to reporters.
  • You curate our lineup as needed.
  • You monitor news developments to ensure our stories of the day are up to date.
  • You write compelling headlines that drive audience interest and engagement.
  • You chase interviews and write original stories as needed.
  • You address typo reports, and handle corrections and clarifications in consultation with the senior digital producer.

What you bring:

  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, daily multi-platform news environment.
  • Strong journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fast-moving information.
  • Experience in copy editing content for digital platforms, including fact-checking, legal vetting and packaging.
  • Superior knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of CBC style is an asset.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A strong proven connection or understanding of the communities we serve in the North, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five years of journalism experience.
