Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of the Specialized Services Model, the Child Therapist is responsible for delivering clinical counselling and therapeutic services for children and families of the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. The role provides culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based care that integrates traditional healing practices and Western therapeutic approaches.

The Child Therapist works collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and interdisciplinary staff to support children's mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. This position also engages families and caregivers to promote wholistic healing, resilience, and positive child development.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual, family, and group counselling for children experiencing emotional, behavioural, and mental health challenges.
  • Experience and skill in a variety of therapeutic modalities for children and families, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma Therapy, Play Therapy, and Family Systems approaches.
  • Develop and implement culturally safe and trauma-informed treatment plans.
  • Conduct assessments, maintain clinical records, and ensure confidentiality in accordance with professional standards and community protocols.
  • Support crisis intervention and safety planning when required.
  • Engage families and caregivers in therapeutic processes, offering guidance and support for healthy family dynamics.
  • Advocate for children and families within education, health, and social systems to ensure equitable access to supports.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date intake records and assessment documentation.
  • Engage in ongoing cultural learning, including participation in ceremonies and teachings to strengthen practice.
  • Ensures that all serious incidents and or risk and liability incidents concerning children, youth and families are documented, communicated and reviewed with the Manager, Specialized Services.
  • Work as part of the Specialized Services team, participating in case reviews, care planning, and weekly clinical meetings.
  • Collaborate with other clinicians, cultural staff, and partner organizations to provide wraparound services.
  • Maintains clear communication and initiates debriefing opportunities with direct supervisor when required and needed.
  • Participate in ongoing training in trauma-informed care, child development, and culturally safe practices.
  • Ensures an inclusive, friendly and safe environment that is supportive of all visitors and participants, accessing programs and services at current and new locations.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related discipline.
  • Registration (or eligibility) with a professional college (e.g., OCSWSSW, CRPO, CPO, CNO, etc.).
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience providing child and family counselling.
  • Experience working with First Nations children, families, and communities.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with traditional healing practices, ceremonies, and cultural teachings.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Must possess a valid "G" driver's license and insured vehicle.
  • Must possess and maintain a clear CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Screen/Check.
