The Dental Hygiene Educator is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to dental hygiene students in accordance with the standards set by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO), the National Dental Hygiene Competencies, and the institution's curriculum. The educator facilitates both didactic and clinical learning, evaluates student performance, and supports student success through mentorship, professional modelling, and evidence-based practice.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Instruction

  • Deliver engaging lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and/or clinical instruction in areas such as oral health education, radiography, periodontology, pathology, preventive dentistry, and community health.
  • Use evidence-based teaching strategies that support diverse learning styles.
  • Develop course materials including lesson plans, assessments, rubrics, and learning resources.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of CDHO standards, infection prevention and control protocols, and current dental hygiene practices.

Clinical Supervision

  • Oversee student performance in clinical and pre-clinic settings, ensuring safe and ethical patient care.
  • Provide real-time clinical feedback and coaching on instrumentation, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning within the dental hygiene scope of practice.
  • Ensure adherence to CDHO standards, occupational health and safety requirements, and institutional policies.

Student Assessment & Evaluation

  • Assess student competencies through practical, written, and clinical evaluations.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback and documentation of student progress.
  • Participate in remediation, academic support, and progression decisions as required.

Program & Curriculum Support

  • Contribute to curriculum development, course updates, and program reviews to ensure alignment with provincial and national dental hygiene education standards.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, accreditation processes, and quality assurance activities.

Professionalism & Collaboration

  • Model professional behaviour, ethics, and communication consistent with CDHO expectations.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, continuing education, and industry involvement.

Qualifications

Required

  • Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) in good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO).
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of recent clinical experience.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Strong knowledge of CDHO Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics, and Infection Prevention & Control guidelines.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Frequent travelling necessary to visit clinics and sites.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences, Education, or related field.
  • Teaching experience at a post-secondary level.
  • Experience in course development, curriculum delivery, or clinical instruction.
  • Additional certifications (local anesthesia, restorative dental hygiene, radiography, etc., as applicable to the institution's program).
