SafeRoads is responsible for conducting reviews for individuals wanting to challenge an IRS penalty for an alcohol or drug-related driving contravention under the Traffic Safety Act within a 30-day legislated timeline.

As a SafeRoads Adjudicator, you will independently review administrative penalties, assess evidence, and issue well-reasoned decisions to promote road safety and justice. This role combines critical thinking, communication, and legal expertise in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

Your key responsibilities include:

• Evaluating written and oral submissions to resolve factual disputes.
• Conducting teleconference and video hearings with professionalism and impartiality.
• Drafting well-structured, legally sound written decisions.
• Staying informed on relevant legislation, case law, and regulatory changes.
• Ensuring adherence to procedural fairness and natural justice in every review.
• Collaborating with peers to maintain consistency and quality in decision-making.

Required:

• Cover letter detailing how your skills and experience align with the role's responsibilities, used to assess writing and communication skills.
• A related university degree (i.e., Public Administration, Public Policy, Law, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or related discipline), supplemented by at least four (4) progressive experience in the following areas:
• decision writing
• analyzing evidence and factual disputes
• making findings of fact
• interpreting and applying legislation and policy in complex situations
• writing briefings that include setting out options and making recommendations
• Interpretation and understanding of legislation including the Traffic Safety Act and its regulations, the Provincial Administrative Penalties Act (PAPA) and its regulations and the Criminal Code (Canada).
• Working knowledge in information management systems and Office 365.

As the successful candidate, you will be required to successfully complete the SafeRoads Adjudicator Training. Your employment is conditional upon the satisfactory performance of your duties and successful completion of this training. Successful completion of this training is required for delegation for vehicle seizure reviews, late applications and designation for Immediate Roadside Sanction Adjudication.

Assets and Preferences:

• Previous experience with SafeRoads adjudication or other tribunals.
• Experience writing formal adjudication decisions.
• Knowledge about tribunals and the administrative law process.
• Working experience analyzing evidence or research and providing recommended options.
• Working knowledge with Alberta's traffic legislation and roadway laws.

Equivalencies are:

• A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience; or a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

• We have two permanent and four temporary - 1 year, full-time positions available, working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:15 am - 4:30 pm).

Recruitment Process:

• Pre-Employment checks will be conducted to assess candidates' suitability. These checks may include: references, criminal record check, academic verification, etc.
