Victims of Crime Assistance Program

The Victims of Crime Assistance Program (VAP) is a new service delivery-based program. VAP is comprised of a suite of services, which will provide supports and services to victims of serious violent crime, and families of homicide victims.

Role Responsibilities

As a Medical Adjudicator (MA), you will review and adjudicate applications where victims have sustained significant injuries due to crime. Acting as a delegate of the Director, you will interpret medical and police information, apply legislation and policy, and make authoritative decisions on eligibility and awards.

- Review applications for completeness and accuracy of medical, crime, and treatment information.

- Interpret medical documentation to assess severity and impairment of injuries directly resulting from crime.

- Obtain clarification from applicants, law enforcement, and medical professionals when information is incomplete or conflicting.

- Consider pre-existing conditions, cumulative injuries, and compliance with treatment in adjudication.

- Prepare trauma-informed written decisions in accordance with the Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act and Regulation.

- Provide medical consultation to program staff and participate in policy development and program enhancements.

- Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with privacy legislation and records management best practices.

- Creative Problem Solving: Identify issues and learn how to mitigate risks of recurring issues. Contribute to streamlined administrative processes while ensure accuracy and timely completion. Troubleshooting skills will enable you to solve issues as they arise.

- Agility: Strong ability to identify and contribute to improvements intended to enhance the Victims of Crime Assistance Program. Incorporate new or modified business processes to better serve victims of crime.

Qualifications

University degree in Medicine, Nursing, or related health discipline with current professional registration in Alberta plus a minimum of 1-year related work experience.

Equivalency

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or

- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Required

- Experience interpreting medical documentation and assessing injury severity.

- Trauma-informed certification or demonstrated work related experience.

- Clear understanding of Alberta’s Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act and related regulation such as the Health Information Act and privacy legislation.

Assets

- 3–5 years in clinical practice or medical review/adjudication.

- Experience in forensic medicine, occupational health, or insurance adjudication.

- Familiarity with criminal justice processes and victim services.

- Knowledge of complex trauma and psychological injury impacts.

- Previous involvement in policy development or program design.
