This role requires full time on site presence.

CBC Northwest Territories (NWT) is looking for an experienced journalist to lead our weekday morning newscasts in Yellowknife. We need someone who is familiar with the news and current affairs of the territory and comfortable working live on air in the early morning.

As the morning newsreader, you'll be responsible for gathering, lining up and presenting the daily news. You'll also be a key voice on The Trailbreaker, delivering headlines and weather alongside our morning show host. Though you'll work mainly with prepared scripts, this role requires someone who is willing and able to chase breaking news and gather material from multiple sources on deadline. The successful candidate will also be comfortable editing tape, gathering and finding material from other northern territories, and working with people throughout the newsroom to deliver the best daily newscasts we can.

This role is an on-site position.

This is a full-time permanent position.

Note: The successful candidate will generally be assigned to work weekdays, 4:30 am to 1:15 pm.

Your responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, line up and deliver newscasts and news breaks.

  • Collaborate with journalists across platforms and programs to chase breaking news and ensure newscasts are up-to-date.

  • Write and edit scripts; cut audio clips and package stories.

  • Conduct interviews on and off air.

  • Vet scripts written by other journalists, providing feedback and coaching to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.

  • Present newscasts on other platforms (streaming, podcasts, digital, video) as required.

Your profile:

  • University degree in journalism or the equivalent in work experience, with at least three years of relevant journalism experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.

  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original story ideas.

  • Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.

  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.

  • Engaging on-air presence, a strong presentation style and an ease with live, on-air work.

  • Ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.

  • Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.

  • Superior script writing and script edging skills.

  • An understanding of the N.W.T.'s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a proven connection to the communities we serve.

  • The ability to speak a language Indigenous to the N.W.T. would be considered a major asset.

  • Possession of a valid driver's licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.

Please include additional documentation or a link to your online demo or website, blog or video in your cover letter.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
