The Child Care Provider takes direction from the House Leader or, alternatively, the Assistant House Leader depending upon the shift. This role is responsible to provide children with a safe and caring environment within the TCOC home. Responsibilities include maintaining supportive relationships with the children, providing age-appropriate and activities and programs, handling behavioral or related issues, providing nutritious meals and snacks and ensuring the home and play areas are safe, clean and well-maintained.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures all programming, appointments, medications, visits, reminders and any other matters relating to individual or collective childcare needs are identified, recorded and initialed daily.

  • Reviews the daily records/information from the previous shift and initializes.

  • Provides children with age-appropriate activities and programs; accompanies children on outings (e.g. library, splash park, etc.) and involves children in a variety of other activities in support of their learning, growth and play (e.g. baking, planting flowers, reading, games, etc.)

  • Participates and supports visits from family members in TCOC homes; establishes and maintains positive relationships with family members on behalf of the child(ren).

  • May transport children to appointments as required (e.g. medical, dental, eye, hearing, counselling, pediatrician, immunizations); completes physician report and forwards to the House Leader.

  • Assists with preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks for the children; ensures food handling and storage follows appropriate safety guidelines.

  • Participates in pre-bedtime, napping and wake-up activities, ensuring children follow a schedule.

  • Ensures all hygiene and cleanliness items are attended to with the children (e.g. bathing, brushing teeth, washing hair, etc.).

  • Accompanies children to school as appropriate; assists children with homework or school projects.

  • Safely administers and monitors medications for children; monitors health and brings concerns forward.

  • Supports the in-take process (e.g. checks physical appearance of the child, provide a meal/snack, draws a bath, provides reassurance, etc) and documents all items belonging to the child.

  • Supports the discharge process (e.g. gathers all items belonging to the child to send with him/her).

  • Provides guidance or information to new employees with learning and understanding role and responsibilities.

  • Assists with handling injuries incurred by children and/or takes to the doctor/emergency or calls 911; may stay with child at the hospital if required; completes an injury report and notifies management immediately.

  • Monitors behavioral issues and responds appropriately ensuring the child, other children and staff are safe; calls crisis team members and/or management as appropriate.

  • Attends staff meetings and participates in safety related initiatives to ensure the safety of the children and team; follows all safety protocols.

  • Adheres to all internal policies and procedures; attends required trainings.

  • Cleans and sanitizes the home; responsible for laundry and general house/yard maintenance (e.g. shovels snow, mows/waters lawn etc.)

  • Ensures the Assistant House Leader and/or House Leader is kept apprised of all issues related to the children's well-being and safety and other matters.

  • Completes Ad hoc or regular reports (e.g. in-home visit reports, incident reports, daily logbooks)

  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy of child/family information.

  • Performs related duties as required and may assume the Assistant House Leader role in his/her absence.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Formal Education

Completion of development courses or post-secondary education relevant to this role is preferred (e.g. Early Childhood Education, crisis/risk management, etc.)

Certifications/Training/Associations

CPR/First Aid is required. Individuals must attend required training upon commencement (e.g. OH&S, crisis intervention, etc).

Licenses

A valid driver's license is necessary.

Experience

Successful and relevant experience working with children of all ages who have behavioral issues or unique backgrounds/special needs will be given preference.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of behavioral issues specific to children, underlying causes, and how to respond effectively
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous history and culture
  • Knowledge of safe working practices, proper hygiene/cleanliness/nutrition
  • Knowledge of internal policies, procedures and protocols

Skills

  • Computer skills (e.g. laptop, e-mail, MSOffice)
  • Writing, spelling, grammar, sentence structure
