About the position

Duties

This position is responsible for supervising/mentoring seasonal staff and students, including developing work plans, scheduling, day to day oversight, and assisting in training.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada's outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

The Manitoba Field Unit covers the south and north portions of the province. One national park and seven national historic sites make up the field unit. This position are based in Churchill, Manitoba (on Hudson Bay) with the focus on Wapusk National Park and the National Historic Sites (York Factory NHS and Prince of Wales Fort NHS). Wapusk NP is an 11,475 km2 remote National Park representing the Hudson-James Lowlands. The National Historic sites are both important components of the fur-trade story and the relationships between English, French and Indigenous peoples. The opportunity to work in such a diverse field unit is what makes this role exciting and interesting.

About Churchill: This is the gateway community for Wapusk and York Factory National Historic Site. It is on the western shores of Hudson Bay, at the mouth of the Churchill River. It has a population of around 800, comprised of Cree, Dene, Inuit, Métis and non-Indigenous people. Churchill is an isolated community, accessible by air and rail. The summers have average high temperatures in the low 20s, while winter temperatures are in the low -20s. Summers have almost perpetual daylight, while winters offer opportunities for aurora viewing. Outdoor activities include: snowshoeing, hiking, skiing, hunting, berry picking, boating/kayaking, biking, off-roading. Amenities in town include a grocery store, post office, bank, gas station, elementary and high schools, library, recreational facility (gymnasium, fitness centre, hockey arena(seasonal), curling rink, swimming pool), hotels, airport, RCMP detachment, volunteer fire department and health centre (Emergency room, Northern Medical Unit (doctors),Pharmacy, Lab Works, X Ray, etc.). The community hosts an annual dog sled race (Hudson Bay Quest), an inter-active Canada Day celebration and the community-wide Aurora Winterfest.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one part-time position from April to December. This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in the same or other parts of the country.

Northern resident means:

a) any person resident within the Local Government District of Churchill*;

b) any person resident in any settlement along the Canadian National Railway "BayLine" from Bird northward;

c) members of the 5-Nations Cree Communities:

  • Fox Lake Cree Nation (Mahkesiw Sakahikhan)
  • York Factory First Nation (Kawéchiwásik)
  • Shamattawa First Nation (Kischimattawow)
  • Split Lake - (Tataskweyak Cree Nation)
  • War Lake First Nation (Mooseocoot)

Operational Requirements

The position requires the incumbent to:

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required
  • Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirements;
  • Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation (boat, helicopter, snow machine, fixed wing small aircraft);
  • Stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods.

A minimum of 2 years post-secondary education or acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to position*Acceptable combination of education, training and experience may include*:A secondary school diploma or PSC approved alternatives; AND

  • Successful completion of a minimum of three (3) courses relevant to the duties of the position (e.g. courses taken through continuing education facilities, colleges, universities, professional or governmental organizations or employers including training provided by Indigenous elders or group that may include but are not limited to courses in heritage interpretation, communications, public speaking, performing arts); AND
  • A minimum of 12 months experience working in the fields of education, interpretation, and/or outreach-communications.

  • Experience in the development of interpretive programs and events to a wide range of audiences using a variety of presentation techniques
  • Experience in the delivery of cultural and/or natural heritage programs
  • Experience in working with stakeholders and partners (i.e. tour operators, school board, communities and Indigenous groups)
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
