Company Overview:
We are a growing logistics company specializing in international shipping services, handling personal effects, automotive, and general cargo via sea and air freight to destinations outside Canada. We are seeking an experienced customs brokerage professional to develop and deliver a comprehensive training program for our team to enhance compliance, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Position Summary:
We require a seasoned customs broker or trade compliance expert to train, advise, and support our team on Canadian and international customs procedures for sea and air freight operations. The contractor will develop and deliver a structured training program while also providing consultative guidance on improve process accuracy, compliance and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Training and Development & Delivery
· Design a comprehensive training curriculum covering sea and air freight customs procedures.
· Conduct structured training sessions for staff at various experience levels.
· Develop practical case studies using real-world international trade scenarios
· Create training materials, manuals, and reference guides
· Deliver hands-on training sessions on customs documentation and electronic filing systems.
Operational Areas to Cover
· CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) regulations and procedures.
· International customs documentation and requirements.
· Harmonized System (HS) code classification
· CARM (CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management) System,
· Personal effects clearance procedures
· Automotive import/export requirements
· Dangerous goods regulations (air/sea)
· Trade agreement utilization (CETA, CPTPP, etc)
· Duty and tax calculations
· Documentation preparation and filing
· Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems
Ongoing Support
· Provide mentorship and coaching throughout the engagement.
· Review and validate initial customs filings
· Troubleshoot complex clearance or compliance issues
· Advise on process improvements and best practices
· Ensure continued compliance with evolving regulations
Required Qualifications
· Licensed Canadian Customs Broker and/or with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
· Proven experience developing and delivering training programs.
· Expert knowledge of CBSA regulations and procedures
· Demonstrated experience in both sea and air freight customs clearance
· Familiarity with international customs procedures, particularly Eastern European and Asian markets.
· Strong understanding of personal effects and automotive import/export regulations
· Proficiency with customs software systems and the CARM platform.
· Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills
· Ability to work independently and manage project deliverables within agreed timelines.
Preferred
· Experience across multiple international trade corridors
· Background in freight forwarding or logistics operations
· Professional training or adult education credentials
· Knowledge of dangerous goods regulations
· IATA/FIATA certifications
Deliverables
· Comprehensive training curriculum and materials
· Regular trainee progress assessments and feedback reports
· Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and workflow documentation
· Compliance checklists and reference materials
· Monthly progress summaries outlining training hours delivered, topics covered, and skill improvements observed
· Capability assessment report for HR – including:
o Evaluation of team members' proficiency across key customs functions (classification, documentation, valuation, CARM, etc.)
o Identification of further training needs or gaps
o Recommendations for ongoing professional development plans
o Summary of role readiness for customs-related positions
