The Senior Vice President, Risk is an integral role within Travelers, one of which that is vital to the long term growth and success of the business. The Senior Vice President, Risk requires a high degree of interface with TCC's clients and ongoing management of Travelers' portfolio investments.
The Senior Vice President, Risk is a critical leadership role within Travelers Capital, responsible for protecting and recovering invested capital across a portfolio of complex, distressed, and high-touch investments. This position requires a hands-on, commercially disciplined approach to workouts, restructurings, and realizations while ensuring capital efficiency and maximizing recoveries. Success is defined not only by minimizing losses, but by generating revenues and optimizing outcomes within challenged situations.
The Senior Vice President, Risk will work closely with the portfolio and leadership team to assist in the effective management and operational efficiency in all aspects of distressed investments within the portfolio and business, contributing to the profitable growth and scalability of Travelers Capital.
Mission: What Success Looks Like
- Protect deployed capitalby monitoring enforcing covenants, managing collateral, and preserving structural seniority.
- Recover and realize efficientlyby executing disciplined restructurings, workouts, and recovery proceedings that maximize net capital return.
- Generate revenues from within the portfoliothrough active amendments, restructuring strategies, and monetization of collateral/realizations.
- Deliver transparency and credibilityto investors, management, and internal committees through disciplined reporting, valuations, and analysis.
- Build institutional capabilityby mentoring the team in workout discipline, process rigor, and realization strategies.
What you'll be doing:
Restructuring/workout leadership
- Structure, negotiate, recommend, and author formal credit amendments to the investment committee and/or investment partners, complete with key credit metrics, and control the documentation, execution, and implementation process of such amendments.
- Chair (or co-chair) weekly portfolio reviews; highlight watch list names, mark changes, and remediation steps.
- Works with Managing Partner and accounting department as a liaison to manage the proper accounting of each financing during the term of the investment.
- Proactively monitor and work with portfolio clients (borrowers) going through periods of rigorous transition, providing strategic advice, consult, analysis, and recommendations to the Managing Partner and investment committee on future looking amendments to maintain good standing and preservation of capital.
- Responsible for ongoing documentation and working with outside firms (i.e. counsel, trustees, etc.) on all portfolio processes including, but not limited to, regular course loan/lease modifications, payout requests, asset discharge requests, renewal and extension agreements, potential workout documentation (i.e. demand notices, forbearance agreements, etc.), pending and ongoing recovery, remediation and restructuring materials, and initiative and conduct formal recovery proceedings, including appointment of bailiffs and receivers. Assemble and maintain certain standard documents that can be completed in house as well.
- Navigate intricate legal and security regimes and their respective impact/application to the portfolio (e.g., U.S. Chapter 11, Article 9; Canadian CCAA, BIA, PPSA provincial filings).
Risk, compliance and governance
- Ensure alignment with senior leadership and key stakeholders on workout strategy to ensure the Company protects its capital.
- Maintain documentation audit trail, support all legal and regulatory reporting (e.g., Form PF, AIFMD equivalents, Canadian securities filings as needed).
- Responsible for portfolio organization and maintenance by obtaining final or post closing requirements to ensure each file is complete, monitoring timelines and milestones which enable the lender's portfolio management rights (i.e. annual collateral valuations, etc.), and the execution and management of said lender rights.
- Understand and adhere to the standards and procedures of the Anti Money Laundering program, Know Your Customer requirements, and Guidelines for Business Conduct.
- Responsible for reporting on and escalating any unusual occurrences or fraudulent activities in any areas of the distressed portfolio
- Monitor milestones, collateral valuations, and trigger events that enable lender remedies, ensuring timelines are enforced
- Navigate complex legal/security regimes (e.g., PPSA, UCC Article 9, CCAA, Chapter 11) to secure and optimize recovery outcomes.
Stakeholder and investor Engagement
- Assess several business concerns and work with the team to formulate recommendations to the investment committee/various stakeholders. This may include preparing written reports for Travelers' counsel and/or other stakeholders in accordance with the mandate of the file and collaborating with a trustee/receiver in dealing with legal elements of the recovery process.
- Quarterly, or more frequent, prepare high-quality credit reports, investor decks, and narrative updates on distressed assets, recoveries, and workout strategies.
- Provide transparent and timely communication to internal committees, co-lenders, trustees, and receivers throughout restructurings and recoveries
- Contribute to fundraising and co-investment discussions by demonstrating Travelers' track record and disciplined approach to workouts and recoveries.
Leadership and talent development
- Foster collaborative culture withal internal teams, legal, ops, and valuation teams across offices.
- Mentor and manage associates, analysts, and directors focused on distressed portfolios, setting high standards for analysis, recovery planning, and documentation.
- Instill discipline in workout processes, valuation approaches, and recovery metrics.
- Promote collaboration with internal teams while identifying process improvements and automation opportunities to increase efficiency in file management and realization.
- Exhibit a natural curiosity for the subject matter and apply critical thinking to the task at hand and its respective impact on the overall business and its stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities for automation/streamlining and process improvements to improve efficiencies and to increase productivity in workflows.
Key Deliverables
- Efficient recovery and realization of distressed loans and leases.
- Consistent protection of deployed capital through proactive monitoring and enforcement.
- Clear, credible reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
- Enhanced capability of the Special Accounts function to scale with growth of the business
What you bring:
- 6+ years of job-related experience, preferably within a financial institution, private capital firm, accounting or advisory firm, law firm.
- Bachelor's Degree in Commerce or Law, or related field, or diploma of equivalent recognition with at least 3-4 years of study
- Demonstrated experience & accountability across U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions deemed an asset
- Deep familiarity with restructuring processes and a working knowledge of legal considerations in cross-border lending (with structuring support)
- Professional designation: CPA, CFA, LIT, CIRP, J.D., or restricting credentials deemed an asset
- Strong integrity, professionalism and work ethic without sacrificing your ability to have fun on the job
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
- Advanced knowledge of general business principles and practices, including, analyzing, and interpreting financial data as well as a working knowledge of secured creditor enforcement and remediation rights
- Ability to work with many internal and external stakeholders and to negotiate in the interest of the firm
- Experience within or understanding of the asset-based lending industry and/or restructuring & insolvency industry an asset.
- Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and specifically Excel
- Ability to complete tasks with thoroughness and attention to detail, while also effectively meeting deadlines and managing complex and heavy workloads with minimal supervision.
- Adapts and identifies with Travelers culture, vision, purpose, mission, and EASY principles.
