**Position Summary**

Seabird Island is committed to providing support to Clients and Elders in their homes. We are seeking a Health Care Assistant to join our team, working collaboratively to assist in daily living and personal care services in patients’ homes in accordance with an established care plan.

Under the direction of the Better at Home Supervisor the Health Care Assistant provides culturally informed health care and support services for eligible residents who have acute, chronic, palliative, or rehabilitative health care needs. These services include a variety of in-home care services such as home cleaning, personal care, and referrals to programs to assist clients to maintain optimum health in their own homes. The Health Care Assistant will also engage in community relations activities to supporting clients and the community.

**What You'll Do**
- Attending regularly and consistently to the personal care needs of clients such as bathing, hygiene, grooming etc. in a dignifying and respectful matter.
- Support clients with housekeeping tasks such as laundry, light cleaning, and organizing living spaces.
- Provide companionship, engage clients in meaningful activities, and ensure mental and emotional well-being.
- Provide medication reminders and assist clients with following their medication routines.
- Ensure clients’ homes are safe and free from hazards by addressing mobility risks and reporting any unsafe conditions.
- Assist with escorting clients to medical appointments, errands, or community events as needed.
- Monitor clients’ overall well-being, ensuring their safety and comfort.
- Building a relationship based on respect, and offer support, guidance, and direction when appropriate.
- Respecting the workplace physical structure, keeping it clean, safe, and secure for those we support Being responsible for each person's safety in all situations; ensuring medical attention is sought, notifying those concerned e.g., fire, car accident, etc.
- Must maintain professional conduct, boundaries, and ethical standards with a commitment to the principles and values of the First Nations Communities
- Regularly update client records in Mustimuhw database.
- Interacting respectfully and consistently with family, team, and community agencies.
- Maintain all personal matters regarding individuals, their families and team members as confidential.

**Other Duties**
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, Director, Chief Administrative
Officer, or Chief & Council.

**Working / Special Conditions**
- Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively travel between our facilities and the communities we serve to support our clients and work.

**What You Bring**

**Qualifications**:

- Health Care Assistant Certificate required.
- At least 2 years of relevant experience working within in a healthcare role.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Successfully pass a tuberculosis screening
- First aid, CPR & AED certificate required.
- Food Safe Level 1.
- Must be physically and emotionally capable of carrying out the duties of the position.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding clients’ families and staff members.
- A positive professional and non-judgmental attitude.

**Preferred**:

- Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
- Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
- Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

**Cultural Competency**:

- Understanding of First Nations cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
