Community Justice Worker

The John Howard Society is a criminal justice agency that provides services in the areas of prevention, intervention, and reintegration. Our primary focus is to reduce the impact of crime and its causes through the delivery of relevant programs.
**Position Summary**:Reintegration Program provides evidence-based case management support to Individual involved in the justice system. This program specifically supports Indigenous, Black, and other racialized Individuals. This program will focus on providing specialized supports to build protective factors in clients through case management, intensive support, referrals to community resources, client advocacy and collaboration, and individual goal planning. The program utilizes a collaborative and integrated approach to increase protective factors which may include establishing positive support systems, social and emotional learning, accessing healthcare for both physical and mental health, food security, housing stability, employment, and education.
The function of this position is to provide support to individuals who are involved with the Criminal Justice System and are living or returning to communities in York Region. The Reintegration Worker will conduct intake assessments; needs assessments; goal planning and learning activities; as well as provide housing support and referrals to community resources.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Conduct intake assessments, specialized assessments and needs/risk evaluation
- Conduct 1:1 session with to support with goal planning, including support with resume building, social and emotional learning, life skills, financial literacy, and coping skills
- Maintain ongoing case management appointments and follow-up calls
- Complete goal planning exercises and various learning activities with client based on their individual needs
- Provide on site support at our office location as well as our courthouse location(s)
- Create and facilitate program workshops for clients
- Attend outreach Centre assigned by program manager to provide on site support for incarcerated individuals
- Maintain partnerships with community agencies and engage in collaboration and partnership development, as directed by the program Manager
- Complete statistical data collection, and maintain client intake statistics, and financial ledgers
for the program
- Maintain proper documentation, including client consent, to enhance program evaluation
- Maintain membership on committees and working groups, as directed by the program Manager
- Participate in committees and working groups as directed by the Program Manager.
- Uphold the program standards of JHSYR and engage in continuous learning and professional development.
- Maintain professional boundaries with clients and colleagues.
- Adhere to a non-judgmental, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approach to work.
- Attend staff and team meetings, as well as other community events as required by agency and/or program.
- Accommodate flexible hours, including both day and evening schedules.
- Serve as a JHSYR Designated Bingo Ambassador at least once per quarter, contributing to building strong, connected communities and supporting the delivery of essential services.
- Other duties as assigned by program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-Secondary education in related field (i.e. Social Work, Criminology, Addictions and Mental Health, Child and Youth Care, ), or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience
- Experience providing case management support to justice involved youth.
- Experience providing support to BIPOC individuals in issues related to the criminal justice system, mental health, trauma, substance use, and relationships
- Lived experience of involvement with the criminal justice system, welfare system, and/or mental health system is an asset
- Ability to speak multiple languages is an asset
- Demonstrate understanding of complex criminogenic risks and needs facing clients
- Possess an understanding of institutional and other systemic barriers and how they impact individual’s development and access to services
- Professional demeanor with strong rapport and relationship building skills
- Ability to actively listen and provide an empathetic approach to client interaction
- Knowledge of goal planning and mental health and wellness activities with the ability to seek out new learning activities when needed
- Ability to maintain relationships with community agencies and stakeholders
- Strong administrative and organizational skills and abilities
- Knowledge of community resources throughout York Region with the ability to seek out new community resources as needed
- Knowledge in suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention skills and safety planning; and ability to manage conflict, crises and escalating situations calmly and confidently
- Approach work through a trauma-informed and client-centered lens
