**Who we are**:
The Public Health Intelligence division has a central role in monitoring and reporting on population health issues, identifying health disparities and emerging threats, conducting research, and advancing applied science and public health practice within the health department. Our goal is for the section's programs and services to be effective, evidence-informed and in accordance with Peel Public Health's strategic plan. The Population Health Assessment section applies epidemiologic and statistical methods to help monitor the health status of Peel residents. We play a major role in assessing and supporting strategic and program priorities for Peel Health and delivery of the Ministry of Health's Ontario Public Health Standards.
In this role you will Supervise/ Manage a team of 4-5 reports.
**What you will do in this role**:
The Supervisor, Population Health Assessment provides the Region with expertise in the areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, survey methods, and project management. The Supervisor coordinates the activities of health analysts and epidemiology student placements, both of which are required to monitor the health status of Peel residents through data acquisition, cleaning, analysis and reporting.
- Recruit, orient, supervise, motivate and mentor direct reports
- Coordinate the acquisition, cleaning and analysis of routine health status data and health status-related data from external partners
- Coordinate population health status assessment analysis and reporting of health status data for the Public Health Data Website
- Play a consultative role in the development, implementation, and evaluation of information collection and reporting methods
- Consult with public health staff regarding data/health information as it relates to research and evaluation activities
- Continually optimize the form and function of the Population Health Assessment Team aligned with the Ontario Public Health Standards Population Health Assessment & Surveillance foundational standard
- Assist in the design and implementation of strategies to disseminate health status report(s) and data/health information both internally and externally
- Provide expert advice/consultation on population health data that is applicable to evaluation and research studies, interpretation of data/health information and investigations of communicable disease outbreaks or non-communicable disease clusters
- Coordinate and participate in the generation of literature reviews on epidemiology methods, biostatistics and population health assessment issues
- Assist the Manager in preparing and monitoring work plans, the team budget, and workforce development activities related to health status assessment for the Population Health Assessment Team
- Coordinate assigned projects for the health analysts and students
- Participate in departmental, regional and provincial committees, as required
**What the role requires**:
- 5 years of epidemiology and supervisory experience
- Expert knowledge of analytical, statistical and epidemiological methods normally acquired by an MSc, MHSc or MPH in epidemiology or equivalent
- Evidence of experience with epidemiological study design and community health research (e.g., epidemiological studies, needs assessments, and community surveys)
- Combination of education and experience may be considered
**Skills/Abilities**:
- Ability to synthesize, evaluate and integrate health/epidemiological information from multiple sources, and to provide recommendations for policy formulation/dissemination
- Knowledge and understanding of public health and community health issues
- Knowledge and experience in conducting literature reviews and critical appraisal
- Excellent computer skills including knowledge and experience in the use of computer software for statistical analyses and data visualization, in particular Microsoft Excel, Stata and PowerBI (other relevant examples: SPSS, R, SAS, Epi-Info, Microsoft Access)
- Demonstrated experience of project management, facilitation, report writing, and organization skills
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
