THE ROLE:
PETRONAS Canada has an opportunity for an Indigenous Relations Advisor to support our upstream business in northeast British Columbia. You will collaborate with Indigenous Nations in our operating area, to build and maintain long-term relationships based on mutual trust and respect.

You will lead our Indigenous pre-engagement and consultation efforts, collaborating with First Nations to imbed community input into our projects, mitigate environmental, social and cultural impacts, and support regulatory and permitting processes.

This position is ideally based in Fort St. John, British Columbia, however, it may also be based in our Calgary Head Office. The position will require frequent travel to the field and to Indigenous Nations in northeast British Columbia.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

- Build strong, positive relationships at all levels with local Indigenous governments and communities
- Play a key role in the project permitting process by collaborating directly with the Land departments of local Indigenous governments, community members and elders, to support early engagement, development and land use planning, project reviews, consultation, and mitigations
- Arrange, coordinate, and participate in project site visits, respectfully facilitating the collection and incorporation of input and feedback from community members and representatives
- Facilitate the inclusion of community values, interests and traditional knowledge into project and program planning
- Work with key internal stakeholders to develop strategies and recommendations to strengthen Indigenous engagement, inclusion, and consultation
- Collaborate with Indigenous governments and communities as well as internal departments, to support, community engagement, business development, community investment, employment and training initiatives
- Provide internal direction and strategic advice on issues and opportunities that pertain to Indigenous relations and prepare recommendations as required
- Support the implementation of the Indigenous Relations Strategy and Policy Guidelines

WHAT YOU BRING:

- Post-secondary degree or diploma in relevant discipline and a minimum 5 years’ work experience in Indigenous relations, consultation, and project permitting (or an equivalent combination of education and work experience)
- Working knowledge, understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Treaty Rights
- Indigenous consultation and engagement experience, including a strong understanding of regulatory processes, social, cultural, environmental, and cumulative effects management.
- Knowledge and exposure to the regulatory and permitting processes of the British Columbia Energy Regulator (previously the BC Oil and Gas Commission)
- Exposure to land use planning and the traditional/current land use practices of Indigenous Peoples in northeast BC
- Working knowledge of provincial/federal regulatory and impact assessment processes, First Nations engagement guidelines in British Columbia
- Proven ability to influence and build relationships internally and externally
- Demonstrated working knowledge and appreciation for Indigenous cultures, history, rights, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and other fundamental issues relating to land use, traditional knowledge, and governance structures
