Job Summary

The Assistant Media Strategist will be responsible for issues management support and support content creation for University Affairs and Media Relations. This will include developing reactive and proactive messaging as required, working alongside the Senior Media Strategist, Acting Senior Director, Director and other Media Relations team members on issues as they occur at the Senior Media Strategist’s, and media training where appropriate.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Director, University Affairs. Supports Media Relations

Work Performed- Messaging: Edit and writes proactive and reactive media messaging and content for news.ubc.ca, and create other communications as required to support the University Affairs and Media Relations teams in a support capacity.- Issues support: Works in a support capacity with University Affairs and Media Relations team members on issues as and when required, including possible support outside business hours. Support may include messaging, information sharing, stakeholder engagement, and other duties across the enterprise.- Media training: Support the provision of media training to issues spokespersons as and when appropriate.- Strategic Communications: Responds to issues and communication consultation as needed.- Research and Reporting: Provides support on social media monitoring and reporting to leadership; provide research support for other institutional projects.- External Communications: Write, assists or edits the writing of, news releases, media statements and other materials coming from university stakeholders as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Makes decisions regarding writing and editing communication materials. Negative perceptions of the department and the university will result if incorrect information is provided internally and externally.

Supervision Received

Reports to and works under general direction of Director, University Affairs. Work is reviewed in terms of conformance with established standards and specific objectives.

Supervision Given

Oversight of issues, writing, and media relations work. May manage and co-ordinate work of staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of, and experience with writing for media purposes on deadline with a high attention to detail
- Demonstrated experience managing projects with multiple stakeholders and interests, and managing sensitive issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a very positive mindset; flexible, adaptable team player with good relationship-building and collaboration skills.
- Strong writing, editing skills. Some issues management experience is an asset. Ability to conceptualize and provide digital and social media communications advice.
- Ability to work effectively with the university's technical implementation teams. Must have initiative, be a self-starter, and adapt easily to changing priorities; ability to manage multiple initiatives.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Organizational and multi-tasking skills required.
- Ability to stay calm in crisis or emergency situations. Must have flexibility to work after-hours and on weekends as needed.
- Experience working for large organizations on multiple issues.
- Experience with and knowledge of UBC hierarchy.
- Working knowledge of privacy law.
