**The Opportunity**
The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. The Parks and Forestry Branch is responsible for the management, maintenance, and ongoing care of over 3,100 acres of waterfront, parkland and open space including 127 parks and 145 kilometers of trails. Services include horticulture displays and maintenance, turf management, shoreline maintenance, maintenance of parks amenities such as playgrounds, play courts, picnic shelters, and spray pads, waste collection, landscape construction, City's outdoor rink program, greenhouse operations, trails maintenance, and winter snow removal operations.
The Horticulture and Roads Operator position is seasonally assigned to Horticulture from May - November each year.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Horticulture Foreperson, the Horticulture & Roads Operator is responsible for performing daily horticultural operational, maintenance, inspection, and repair activities for the greenhouse, horticultural displays and adjacent grounds, Arboretum, and green spaces located within the City's parks, waterfront, and open spaces to provide an environment that is safe, clean, attractive and suitable for the residents and visitors of the City of Barrie.
From November - April each year, the Horticulture and Roads Operator position transitions to the role of maintaining roads in the City of Barrie.Under the general guidance and direction of the Roads Operations Foreperson, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of roadways, active transportation, and drainage infrastructure. This position is tasked with plowing, sanding, and salting the roads to ensure safe commuting for both citizens and visitors. Additionally, this position plays a crucial role in collecting and disposing of roadside and road debris, litter, and bulky items, contributing to the overall cleanliness and functionality of the city's roadways.

**Experience**
- Two (2) years of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
**Knowledge/Skill/Ability**
- General knowledge of greenhouse operations, including propagation and growing techniques
- General knowledge of the following legislation regulations, or requirements: Cosmetic Pesticides Ban Act; Occupational Health and Safety Act; Ontario Electrical Safety Code
- Working knowledge of Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR), and the Ontario Traffic Manual - Book 7 - Temporary Conditions
- Working knowledge of the following principles and standards: Horticultural best practices, municipal construction, maintenance and equipment operations, vehicle and equipment safety, safe lifting and handling procedures, collection and disposal procedures for debris, litter and bulky items
- Demonstrated ability to:
