Join us as Student Recreation Assistant **Title**: Recreation Assistant **Responsible To**: Director of Life Enrichment **Qualifications**: - Enrollment in a relevant, post-secondary program such as; Human Resource Management, Health Sciences, Public Relations, Social Work, Gerontology or Recreation Leisure Studies. - Possess the following characteristics and skills; strong interpersonal skills, including active listening and empathy, effective oral and written communication skills, excellent organizational and planning skills, creative problem-solving and good assessment skills. - Demonstrated leadership ability with peers or youth in group settings. - Previous experience with the elderly preferred. - Basic computer skills. **Job Scope**: The Recreation Assistant is responsible for assisting the Recreation Programmer in planning, organizing, developing and delivering group and individual recreational activities for residents of Ocean View Continuing Care Centre in Eastern Passage. **Responsibilities**: - Assist in planning and implementing individual and small group activities for residents. - Assist in planning and implementing therapeutic programs and interventions for residents who have been diagnosed with a form of dementia. - Assist in welcoming new residents to Ocean View Continuing Care Centre - Assist residents in attending social and community outings - Plan and implement a summer garden program - Assist resident to actively participate in the Centre's Gardens - Participate in inter-disciplinary resident care reviews - Maintain progress notes for assigned one-to-one interventions **Risk & Safety**: - In working together, we will practice and promote a culture of safety; while providing comfort, care and compassion for residents and families of Ocean View - Ensures to "take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances to protect the employee's own health and safety and that of other persons at or near the workplace" ~ NS OHS Act 17.1(a) - Maintains and promotes health and safety standards and procedures according to Ocean View guidelines and resident care standards to a level consistent with recognized provincial standards including ethical guidelines. - Ensures compliance of all applicable regulatory laws, by-laws, codes, standards, guidelines and acts. - Promotes a safe and healthy workplace for staff and volunteers - Promotes a safe and healthy environment for residents and their families - Participates, when required in initiatives that minimize risk and promote safety - Ensures that risks are minimized and proactively addressed for the interest of the Ocean View **Ethics & Values**: - Maintains ethical standards in the scope of job responsibility - Champions the values established by the Society in day to day operations - Champions the mission, vision and strategic directions established by the Ocean View Continuing Care Centre Quality Initiatives: - Demonstrate commitment to quality and promote a quality culture. - Day-to-day implementation of the quality care & services. - Continually look for ways to improve quality of care or service. - Work as part of teams/committees to manage quality. **Hourly wage**: $15.50.
