Tenant Support Worker

Safe at Home Society is looking for a Tenant Support Worker to join our community-based team This individual must be a strengths-based, creative team player committed to preventing homelessness by staying housing-focused. This position is administered by Safe at Home Society and will directly report to a Program Supervisor. Day-to-day work is very team focused.
**PRIMARY OBJECTIVE**:The Tenant Support Worker (TSW) provides tenancy support to up to 30 individuals temporarily housed at the former High Country Inn (HCI). The TSW’s primary focus will be to create a welcoming, non-discriminatory and safe environment that supports individual dignity and personal choice for all resident while ensuring safety and security of tenants and building.
**POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND SCOPE**
- Responsibilities - Tenant Support_
- Establish and maintain relationships with tenants who have a history of homelessness using housing first and harm reduction approach;
- Develop positive relationships with individuals who may have mental health, physical health and/or substance use challenges in their lives;
- Provide tenants with information about temporary housing and program guidelines, including room inspections and orientation at move-in, enforcing resident expectations and building safety procedures;
- Provide crisis management and intervention by responding to emergency situations within the building through conflict-resolution, guest management, suicide prevention, and de-escalation techniques;
- Promote positive resident choices about activities of daily living (meals, cleaning, laundry) and support positive tenant choices to uphold tenancy stability;
- Facilitate tenant activities onsite using internal or external resources and supports;
- Problem-solve where tenancies appear unsustainable and assist in negotiating specific arrangements to mitigate evictions, and guest/tenant and neighbour conflict;
- Facilitate communication between clients and others as needed to assist clients to connect with resources and achieve their goals, while upholding client confidentiality;
- Work directly with external community supports, government, non-government and First Nation government providers to ensure tenant’s have their support needs attended to;
- Maintain detailed case notes and contact lists of involved supports and community services and other documentation as required;
- Participate regularly in team meetings and make recommendations to Program Supervisor regarding service delivery gaps reflective of tenant support needs.
- Responsibilities - Cleaning and Maintenance_
- Report any building maintenance issues to the Program Supervisor immediately;
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, mitigating pest infestations, infectious diseases, and the smoking of cannabis or cigarettes indoors;
- Daily light cleaning duties of common areas and tenant spaces as needed/requested;
- Prepare rooms for move-ins according to established room cleaning protocols;
- Re-stock facility supplies and notify Supervisor when purchases are necessary;
- Maintain building security by performing regularly scheduled walk throughs both inside and outside the building;
- Monitor the good neighbour line onsite, ensuring strong neighbourhood relationships including maintenance and cleanliness issues around the vicinity of the building; and
- Monitor CCTV footage at all times, investigating and managing disturbances according to safety policies and procedures
- Qualifications: _
- Completed post-secondary education in social services or related field and a minimum 2 years work, volunteer, or lived experience related to homelessness, outreach, housing, and supports; a combination of experiences will be considered;
- Knowledge of decolonising, trauma-informed, and housing first approaches to client support;
- Awareness of the complexities of homelessness, poverty, and the colonial context of homelessness in the Yukon, among other related issues;
- Awareness of non-government, First Nations, and territorial government agencies and resources as they relate to client support;
- Standard First Aid/CPR required;
- Naloxone/Narcan training an asset; and
- The submission of a Vulnerable Sector police check required
- Skills & Abilities_
- Sound knowledge of Universal Precautions and harm reduction techniques;
- Knowledge of the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act;
- Excellent conflict management/crisis prevention/mediation training and/or demonstrated skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team;
- Demonstrated ability to work accessibly and effectively with individuals living with multiple barriers to stable housing;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Presentation skills an asset but not essential;
- Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office; and
- Possesses the ability to manage competing priorities and coordinate several tasks at once.
