Reporting to the Manufacturing Team Leader, the Cabinet Maker and Youth Mentor is responsible for crafting and assembling cabinets and other wood products to detailed specifications. The Cabinet Maker and Youth Mentor produce quality cabinets to specification by reading blueprints and replicating past designs using hand tools and woodworking machines in a manufacturing environment. The Cabinet Maker and Youth Mentor is responsible for knowing and practicing safe working methods and has a strong knowledge of shop practices, procedures, techniques, tools, equipment, quality control, and safety equipment. Quality craftsmanship and the possession of mathematical and analytical skills are critical for success. The Cabinet Maker and Youth Mentor are also responsible for maintaining a clean and tidy work area, conducting regular maintenance of tools and machinery, and assisting other carpenters and cabinet makers. Training of youth is paramount. The Cabinet Maker and Youth Mentor assist in the mentoring of skills to youth, including skills development, with specific emphasis on youth employment training and job attainment in a dynamic team environment. Other duties may be assigned, as necessary.
**Responsibilities**:
- Execute day-to-day operations within the Woodshop facility.
- Assist in the training of youth on woodworking skills, while adhering to all site health and safety guidelines
- Maintain and update data on youth’s training competencies.
- Interact with guests and members of the community, providing service and representing YOU.
- Comply with all governmental and regulatory requirements ensuring safe tool-handling practices.
- Operate shop-specific power tools - panel saw, table saw, miter saw, band, saw, power planer, drum sander, edge bander, Kreg hole drill, drill press, boring machine, router table, hand sanders, drills, cutting saws, and grinder.
- Complete cleaning and preventative maintenance of power tools and equipment - oiling, greasing, blade, and tooling replacements
- Complete installation and ensure proper function of hardware on cabinets and/or custom wood projects.
- Ensure proper fit and function of cabinet parts and assembly of cabinets.
- Rework of wood projects, as required.
- Drilling, cutting, edge banding, boring, gluing, sanding, oiling, varnishing, cleaning, assembly, and detailing wood projects.
- Use of branding iron for company and custom logo
- Consult with various staff regarding progress and issues arising from programs.
- Participates in daily team meetings regarding production and programming needs, upcoming business needs, and day-to-day operations.
- Answers questions regarding programming for internal YOU staff and external community services
- Report any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard.
- Ensure all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and YOU policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents.
- Other related duties, as assigned.
**Qualifications**:
- 5 years experience as a custom kitchen cabinet maker is required.
- Post-secondary diploma or certification in a related field is preferred.
- The Current Journey Person’s cabinet maker’s certificate is preferred.
- Certificate of Apprenticeship, cabinet maker is preferred.
- Knowledge of the carpentry and millwork industry
- Extensive hands-on experience in drilling, cutting, edge banding, boring, and assembly.
- First Aid, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Mechanically inclined, with the ability to read blueprints and other aspects about the job are required.
- Demonstrated ability to engage, coach, mentor and support youth participants and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to perform administrative tasks such as inventory, record keeping, etc.
- Knowledge of standards for cleanliness, hygiene, and safety in all shop floor areas
- Experience with production and a strong focus on time management and teamwork, ensuring produced products are of high standards to maintain the best quality woodwork possible.
