ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direction of the Manager, Policy & Communications the Policy Advisor is responsible for researching, analyzing, and interpreting current environmental and legislative trends, regulatory obligations, and feedback from stakeholders to develop policy advice and proposed policy positions to help the College in fulfilling its regulatory mandate and goals. Specific deliverables include managing projects end-to-end, supporting CMTO’s Committees and Board, report writing, research, jurisdictional scans, benchmarking, etc. If you’re looking for meaningful work that directly impacts Ontarians who seek the services of RMTs and you’re ready to join a collaborative, respectful team, we can’t wait to hear from you
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide the organization with legislative and policy research and analysis support.
- Conducting research, writing reports, and briefing notes.
- Provide support on CMTO’s governance structure (e.g., drafting/updating governance policies).
- Monitor and interpret government legislation and public policy documents; identify policy issues and implications; use that research to inform legislative briefing notes for CMTO’s Board.
- Regularly and proactively communicate policy trends and emerging issues to the College’s senior leadership.
- Conduct research on specific policy issues identified by CMTO departments and others.
- Co-lead the regular and systematic review and update of regulations and guidance (e.g., Standards of Practice, guidelines) in collaboration with other CMTO departments.
- Lead consultations with RMTs and the public on proposed regulations and draft guidance to the profession.
- Assist and/or lead the drafting of briefing notes, analysis, and presentations for Board and committee meetings.
- Monitor and prepare comparative analysis of other colleges’ activities around updating policies, standards, guidelines and consultations.
- Work proactively with policy teams at other health profession regulators to anticipate policy issues and collaborate on research and analysis.
- Manage end-to-end projects including developing workback plans, setting deadlines and collecting work from multiple departments.
- In addition to role-specific projects, lead and/or participate in projects to enhance the Policy & Communications Department and participate in College-wide initiatives as assigned.
- Support CMTO’s policy events (e.g. identify partners to have in attendance, set goals and expectations, develop speaking notes, presentations, etc.)
SKILLS
- Self-starter with the ability to work with mínimal direction and supervision.
- Create workback dates for project deadlines, Board/committee meetings, and begin preparing deliverables before being asked.
- Organizational, time management and planning skills.
- Project management, including a proven ability to manage and deliver on multiple and competing priorities.
- Meeting management, preparing agendas, sharing materials before and during meetings, taking notes, sharing post-meeting action items and setting deadlines.
- Proven ability to listen critically and actively to understand needs.
- Critical thinking, judgment and problem-solving. - Exemplary communication skills: Verbal and written, ability to convey complex messages in plain language and in various formats (e.g., PowerPoints, newsletter articles).
- Monitor news and legislative updates, and identifying how policy changes may impact CMTO.
- Strong interpersonal skills: Collaboration and relationship management skills, and the ability to influence without formal authority.
- Strong attention to detail: ensuring data is accurate and consistent with what is reported elsewhere, and that grammar, formatting, etc. Is consistent across multiple reports and briefing notes.
- Ability to build relationships within and outside the organization to identify opportunities, facilitate change and decisions.
