Job Summary

This is a full-time position. The Research Coordinator will be located at the UBC Island Medical Program (UVic campus), Victoria BC.

The research coordinator will work with Dr. Arbour on her research studies focusing on genetic conditions in Indigenous communities (projects include, but are not limited to: The Impact of Long QT Syndrome in Northern BC, the Impact of CPT1A in Northern BC and Nunavut, and Silent Genomes).

A high level of computer literacy and a strong background in statistics are essential. Excellent organizational and communication skills, high degree of cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work independently with enthusiasm, and initiative.

Organizational Status
The Research Coordinator will report directly to Dr. Laura Arbour, the Principal Investigator.

Work Performed- Supports the development and refinement of research methodologies by reviewing literature, collaborating with experts and statisticians, and evaluating analysis strategies across projects.- Provides input into the shaping and defining of participant recruitment strategies, ensuring that privacy, confidentiality, and ethical standards are maintained.- Develops and maintains research databases and data collection tools (e.g., REDCap, Progeny, Excel), ensuring integrity, quality control, and proper documentation. Oversees data collection processes, including surveys, medical record reviews, and participant information.-
- Manages project timelines, budgets, and daily operations of the Arbour Lab, ensuring compliance with regulations and effective execution of research activities, while exercising judgment and initiative in coordinating workflows.- Identifies and evaluates potential funding sources for future projects.-
- Collaborates with cross-disciplinary teams and external partners, and contributes to the academic community through meetings, journal clubs, and conferences.- Provides orientation and training to new staff on research databases and research processes, as needed.- Performs other related duties as required.
- Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent will exercise a considerable amount of judgement, and responsibility in decision making in matters related to their job description. Lack of careful attention to database development, data entry, statistical analysis, could be detrimental to the integrity of the project. Poor communication skills with research participants or community stakeholders could jeopardize study participation and reflect badly upon the reputation of the research group. Inaccuracies or incompleteness of data collection, or errors in the collection and handling of biological samples (e.g., sample labelling) could result in erroneous data analysis and study results. Therefore, it is imperative for the incumbent to be meticulous and careful with his/her work.

Furthermore, lack of attention to regulatory and ethical guidelines could suspend the Investigator and University as a site for further research and/or funding. Performance must strictly conform to study protocols (which have been approved by the UBC Clinical Ethics Board), Current tri-Council policy statements need to be adhered to. In addition, a high level of cultural competency and sensitivity is necessary in this position, as any insensitive actions could jeopardize our longstanding research relationship with communities.
