Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.
Purpose/Summary
The Education and Training Lead is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of staff orientation and continuing education programs; coordinates staff development activities; for all TeleHealth programs and acts as a patient education consultant.
The Education and Training Lead is responsible to develop, implement, update and maintain all standard operating guidelines for both clinical and non-clinical roles within TeleHealth programs, ensuring alignment with current best practice, healthcare partners and meeting Accreditation standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff Orientation
- Responsible for the coordination, planning, content, delivery and evaluation of all TeleHealth orientations for all roles.
- Liasing with different departments for scheduling and facilitating presentations.
- Monitoring staff progression and escalation when required.
- Maintaining a full orientation record and competency list for all new hires.
- Completing scheduled interval follow ups post orientation ensuring staff success.
Ongoing Staff Education
- Responsible for the coordination and planning of ongoing education for all staff roles and tracking of same.
- Ongoing staff education includes role specific dedicated content as well as general education for all staff.
- Planning monthly education sessions for staff.
- Sending out monthly education reminders to staff.
- Working with healthcare partners in facilitating education for staff.
The development, oversight and mentorship of multiple precepting teams.
- Responsible for the development and maintenance of all documentation as it relates to the preceptorship programs within TeleHealth.
- Coordinates and plans regular preceptor meetings and provides coaching and feedback to preceptors.
- Responsible for ongoing education of the preceptor team.
- This role has oversight over all preceptors and tracking progress within the role, problem solving issues and escalation when required.
Standard Operating Guideline Development and Maintenance
- Lead the creation, review and revision of all TeleHealth SOGs and processes
- Ensure alignment of SOGs with best practices, legal and contractual requirements, accreditation standards and TeleHealth’s strategic plan.
Primary Staff Resource for all TeleHealth staff
- This role is responsible for advising TeleHealth staff of new processes and education regarding same.
- This is a key role for all TeleHealth staff as it relates to questions and clarifications.
- TeleHealth is continuously expanding and growing as demonstrated in the increase of delivery of programs throughout the years and thus this aspect of the role is utilizing more time because of such.
Healthcare Partnership Engagement
- This role is a main liaison with healthcare partners in creating and updating processes and ensuring alignment between organizations.
- This role is also responsible in organizing monthly education sessions for staff with healthcare partners
Service Delivery
- Plans and delivers an innovative staff education program which will enhance competence, performance, quality and productivity, and will meet the needs of both work at home employees and in-centre staff
