The Betts laboratory undertakes research to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying pluripotency and preimplantation embryo development. The laboratory is particularly interested in the role of metabolic genes and associate signaling pathways that regulate stem cell and embryonic state and fate. For this purpose, the laboratory currently maintains a mouse strain and various wildtype and mutant pluripotent stem cell lines (human, mouse, dog) including the technology to generate induced pluripotent stem cells from differentiated somatic cells and “bastoids” (synthetic embryos) from human pluripotent stem cells.

**Responsibilities**:
The Research Technician will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator to support scientific research on the role of selected genes in mouse models of preimplantation embryo development and in the maintenance and generation of various pluripotent stem cell lines. The role will prepare and conduct various procedures and techniques following set protocols in the research laboratory. The Research Technician will provide technical assistance and advice to students, postdoctoral scholars and researchers on laboratory procedures and equipment techniques. The role will support the maintenance, troubleshooting and servicing of equipment and instrumentation related to the research.

**Qualifications**:

- Education:
- 4-year University bachelor’s degree in Biology or Biotechnology
- Experience:
- 2 years of experience working in a research-intensive laboratory environment including experience culturing pluripotent stem cells, handling mouse strains, and with various molecular biological analyses
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of and ability in culturing pluripotent stem cells of various species
- Knowledge of and ability in generating “blastoids” (synthetic embryos) from pluripotent stem cells
- Knowledge of and ability in culturing preimplantation mouse embryos
- Ability to handle mouse strains with the organizational skills to maintain accurate breeding and housing records
- Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices including the ability to maintain histology equipment
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the events and activities of the laboratory
