**Position Overview**
Reporting to the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Forestry Manager, the Nuji Kelo’toqatijik Earth Keeper Coordinator is responsible for leading the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq’s (CMM) allocation of the Nuji Kelo’toqatijik Earth Keeper Network. The Nuji Kelo’toqatijik Earth Keeper Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the coordination of the Mainland’s Earth Keepers, providing direct support for Community led Earth Keeper initiatives, continuing to develop the Earth Keeper Network with the larger Network, promoting the initiative within communities and with external groups and securing long-term funding the continue the initiative. The Nuji Kelo’toqatijik Earth Keeper Coordinator will also be responsible for performing other tasks as needed to share DENR’s natural resources work within Mi’kmaq First Nation communities, such as attending meetings, assisting with project reports and presentations, and drafting new project proposals.
**Essential Functions and Duties**
- Support existing Earth Keeper within CMM and in member Communities by coordinating joint training and work with partnering organizations
- Provide equipment and logístical support for members of the Earth Keeper Network
- Assist in the development of educational and outreach materials to be used for youth education within Mi’kmaq communities and schools
- Liaise with organisational networks and communities to strengthen working relationships across Network
- Create and deliver presentations, attend periodic meetings, and take notes when requested by Senior Management, and assist DENR staff with various additional duties as requested
**Qualifications and Competencies**
**Position Requirements**:
- Knowledge of traditional Mi’kmaq approaches to resource management
- Knowledge and experience with Mi’kmaq language
- Knowledge of natural resources and environmental issues of concern to Mi’kmaq communities
- Willing and able to work in all weather conditions
- Experience with developing and implementing educational programs
- Experience with proposal writing
- Excellent presentation, facilitation and training skills
- Ability to work effectively with other departments, levels of government, industry and the general public
- Excellent communication skills, written and spoken
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
- Must have a drivers’ license, reliable vehicle and the ability to travel
**Additional Position Requirements**:
- Time in the office in front of a computer is required, in addition to experience using the Microsoft suite of products
- Travel within Nova Scotia will be required
- There is an occasional requirement to work outside of normal working hours related to traveling to/from Mi’kmaw community events and meetings
- Have a successfully completed Criminal record check
**Position Assets**:
- Post-secondary education (bachelor’s degree or college diploma) in a related field and/or several years of related experience
- Knowledge of current First Nation community challenges and opportunities relating to the Natural Resources Sector
- Knowledge of research methodologies and standards pertinent to Natural Resources stewardship and Non-Timber Forest Products
- Ability to multi-task in a fast paced work environment and adapt to changes quickly
- Experience working in or with First Nations communities
- Fluent Mi’kmaw speaker and writer
