Faculty, Indigenous Storyteller-in-residence

BCIT’s **School of Business and Media**is seeking a **temporary, part-time (0.6**FTE**) Faculty, Indigenous Storyteller-in-Residence**. This position brings Indigenous ways of knowing and shares cultural knowledge, oral traditions and media storytelling expertise to programs to expand Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in the School. Engages with students and faculty on knowledge transmission, community connection, and truth-telling. Provides guidance on ethical Indigenous representation in media, the history of Indigenous storytelling traditions, and the role of media in truth and reconciliation.
**Duties & Responsibilities**

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Storytelling and knowledge sharing**
- Leads interactive storytelling sessions, sharing oral histories, lived experiences, and perspectives grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing.
- Guides students in understanding and practicing ethical Indigenous storytelling and representation in media.
- Provides cultural context and teachings on Indigenous media history, including traditional and contemporary storytelling methods (e.g., oral traditions, documentary filmmaking, podcasting, journalism, radio).
**Curriculum and learning integration**
- Collaborates with faculty to incorporate Indigenous storytelling principles into course content.
- Offers guest lectures, workshops, and mentorship opportunities across programs.
- Supports students in developing projects that incorporate Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and voices.
**Community engagement and relationship building**
- Fosters meaningful relationships between BCIT, Indigenous communities, and Indigenous media professionals.
- Connects students with Indigenous journalists, filmmakers, podcasters, and other media professionals.
- Encourages reciprocal learning by bringing Indigenous community voices into classroom discussions.
**Truth and reconciliation in media**
- Addresses the role of journalism, storytelling, and media in shaping Indigenous narratives, past and present.
- Educates students on media responsibility in covering Indigenous issues and communities.
- Provides insight into Indigenous media ethics, sovereignty in storytelling, and decolonizing media practices.
**Qualifications**
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education**:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
**Experience**:
- Experience teaching or mentoring in post-secondary, media, or community education settings.
- Must be an Indigenous media professional with at least 10 years experience.
- Expertise in storytelling (e.g., journalist, filmmaker, podcaster, documentarian, broadcaster, writer).
- Deep understanding of Indigenous oral traditions and storytelling practices.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organizations.
- Strong knowledge of media ethics, Indigenous representation, and reconciliation efforts in Canada.
**Other Skills/Attributes**:
- Knowledge of BC’s Indigenous communities, particularly xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh).
- Familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, particularly CTA 86.

**Salary Range**
- Salary Range: $65,045 - $113,545 per annum.
**Additional Salary Information**
- Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
