Position Overview:
As a Technical Lead within our Powertrain department, you will be responsible for determining the root cause of powertrain component failures, ensuring documentation during disassembly along with generating technical failure analysis repots. In addition to this you will support continuous improvement projects for both Caterpillar equipment and OEM processes.

**Job Description**:
Reporting to the Technical Supervisor and Manager, the Technical Lead will:

- Through the Failure Analysis process, determine root cause of component failure
- Prepare technical reports supporting root cause determination
- Identify and report part and product problems to Caterpillar, through the OEM technical report process, that then may initiate product improvement efforts. This is carried out by; observing and documenting with digital photos and written text, component condition upon disassembly, researching component history, analyzing individual piece parts and relating this information to the function and operation of the components
- Preserve, secure and store failure related parts to support analysis and warranty claims
- Preserve, secure and store “Watch Item” parts for furtherance to Caterpillar
- Assume responsibility for the categorization of parts to determine where financial costing will reside
- Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with Production, Customer Service, and Safety personnel
- Continually work to identify improvements for daily working issues related to the failure analysis process
- When required, assist in the development of technical documentation that supports the OEM remanufacturing processes
- Carry out the OEM portion of product tests as instructed and secure test iron for analysis from completed tests
- Perform all tasks in a safe manner including filling out the Floor Level Hazard Analysis (FLHA), safety observations, and other safety input

Qualifications:

- Eligible for registration with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
- 2-3 years of relevant working experience in Failure Analysis or Reliability
- Mechanical Engineering Technologists (RET/CET) or Heavy Duty Mechanics will be considered on a per case basis
- Strong technical knowledge of powertrain, engine, cylinders and small components & systems, including torque converters, transmissions, differentials, wheel groups, planetary final drives and brakes as relating to Caterpillar equipment
- Technical knowledge of large diesel engines and hydraulic components, and their interaction with the other systems
- Strong root cause analysis skills and extremely high level of attention to detail
- The ability to effectively communicate technical findings both written and verbally
- Above average photography skills and ability to work with DSLR cameras
- Ability to clearly communicate work instructions to production personnel in order to document and preserve evidence of failure
- Fully conversant with Microsoft Office environment. (Word, Excel)
- Familiar with a mid-scale ERP environment
- Familiar with ISO Quality Assurance Programs
- Able to work within a team environment
- The ability to work safely, lead by example, and to contribute to overall company safety

Note:

- This position may require coverage on early, evening, weekend and office shifts. We cover the Production hours which encompass 5AM to 330PM and 4PM to 230AM Monday to Thursday (2 shifts), as well as weekends from 6AM to 630PM. There are also regular 8AM to 4:30 PM office shifts
