It is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and is one of Canada’s largest distributed medical education programs. It is comprised of an Assistant Dean, Rural Regional Community Engagement, a Manager, and 600+ preceptors located in over 60 communities located throughout Southwestern Ontario. Schulich Medicine’s Distributed Education office facilitates rural and regional education and training opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate learners. **Responsibilities**: The Discovery Healthcare Summer Camp Leader will provide an exciting and high-energy camp experience to high school students who are curious about medicine and healthcare careers. The incumbent will be part of a camp team responsible for delivering one-week youth engagement day camps within communities across southwestern Ontario, offering hands-on activities, which require some specialization of healthcare skills. The Discovery Healthcare Summer Camp Leader will carrying out a variety of tasks in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions provided within their camp resource handbook and received from their supervisor. The incumbent will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with their camp team, community camp coordinators and other members of the Western community. **Key Accountabilities**: - Camp Planning and Implementation - Assist the Camp Captain with details for planning camps and ensuring camp location readiness - **Leadership** Under the direction of the Camp Captain: - Provide a daily and high energy camp experience - Provide appropriate and constant supervision and care of campers - Provide support for drop off and pick up following all policies - Facilitate and encourage participation in camp activities - Interact with parents in a professional and polite manner - **Safety** - Ensure accurate daily check-in and check-outs are completed by all campers - Ensure all safety measures are adhered to throughout camp and policies are followed to ensure safety - Report all injuries or safety concerns immediately to the Camp Captain - Ensure only authorized caregivers to sign campers out - Understand and implement the DHC conflict resolution procedures when required - **Other Responsibilities** - Ensure all facilities are tidied and all supplies are put away for the next day/week of camp - Complete a transition report at the end of each full camp week **Education**: Must be a student returning to studies in the fall and enrolled full-time in the following Western programs: - Medical Doctor or Dentistry program within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Bachelor of Science in Nursing program within the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing - Occupation Therapy program or Physical Therapy program within the faculty of Health Sciences - CPR Certification - First aid skills and training **Experience**: Previous work experience in a camp setting or youth engagement organization **Skills, Abilities & Expertise**: - Passion for inspiring and mentoring youth with interest in a healthcare career - Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas and/or activities clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience - Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation - Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, community coordinators, high school students and the public - Ability to multi-task and maintain a well-organized camp environment - Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western's policies and procedures - Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve successful summer day camps within multiple southwestern Ontario communities - Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable - Drivers License and access to a vehicle is an asset - Ability to pass a vulnerable sector police check **Why Western?**: Consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance, experience, and qualifications.
