Library Technician

Under the direction of Manager, Library User Services, the Regular Part-time Library Technician (Trafalgar) works with other Library staff to support students as they learn at and create a sense of belonging, connection, and engagement. The incumbent does this through performing a variety of library tasks such as performing all circulation functions, using automated library systems, assisting library users in the operation of the public library catalogue and performing basic printer troubleshooting. The position provides virtual and physical quick reference, research support, citation support, and library use guidance, and participates in keeping the collection in order through physical repairs, shelf reading, and shelving as required. This role supports promotion of the library at events, promotes services to students, and creates engaging video content on library topics as assigned. Incumbent will support the Technical Services Team by helping with processing, repairs and special projects. Issues which are unresolved are referred to the full-time staff or manager in the appropriate area.
**What You’ll Be Doing**
Service Points: Reference and Circulation
- Following established library procedures/guidelines performs circulation functions by charging and discharging materials, managing requests, and collecting fines using Alma;
- Retrieving and shelving library materials and shelf-reading collection when required;
- Providing virtual and in person reference service and guidance to library users by interpreting their needs through a reference interview;
- Demonstrating the use of the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and library databases to locate relevant information;
- Recommending appropriate electronic database(s) and guiding users in basic search strategy skills to achieve optimal results;
- Performing library opening or closing by unlocking or locking the doors and other areas to be secured, making closing announcements, pushing in chairs, tidying tables and desks, other tasks according to established procedures;
- Working in collaboration with the Manager, Library User Services to monitor and provide support to Sheridan Library Student Clerks during evening shifts;
Library Events and Digital Outreach Support
- Promoting awareness of library services and programs to library visitors;
- Providing support for events in Library spaces under the direction of Manager, Library User Services;
- Utilizing video editing software and accessibility tools to produce high-quality accessible videos;
- Collaborating with library staff and librarian team to identify video topics and target audience;
- Uploading and managing video content on the library's website and other platforms using appropriate metadata tagging for searching and retrieval;
Technical Services Support
- Preparing new library materials for circulation by performing processing tasks such as stamping, labeling, barcoding and more;
- Repairing damaged materials, including books and serials;
- Following Cataloguing Team workflows for managing new acquisitions of library materials;
- Supporting Cataloguing Team with modifying cataloguing records, items, or holdings, as directed;
- Supporting special projects related to Technical Services such as weeding, inventory, donation assessment, and serials clean up, under the direction of the Technical Services team and Manager, Integrated Library Services;
- Maintaining usage statistics on all services provided;
- Performing other related duties as assigned.

- Minimum of a Diploma or Degree in Library Technician;
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience;
- Knowledge and understanding of automated library information systems such as ALMA or SIRSI, and discovery layer such as PrimoVE or Summon is required;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and well-developed on-line search skills are required;
- Ability to work independently within established library guidelines/policies and as part of a team;
- Practical knowledge of video creation and editing software is considered an asset.
