Job Summary
The UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre (DERC) is required to be self-sustaining financially; revenues from milk production and animal sales generate approximately $3.5 million dollars per year. The Dairy Centre ($30 million operation, 500+ experimental animals, 110+ hectares of land with multiple building sites) is located on Agriculture and Agri-Food's Agassiz Research Station.
This position, in conjunction with the Business Operations Manager, ensures that the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre supports the academic needs of UBC and the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and meets the goal of being financially self-sustainable. One of the primary goals is to facilitate research and educational opportunities between the University, industry and local communities.
Specifically, the Animal Health, Welfare and Research (AHWR) Manager manages the herd of 500+ animals and is responsible for the planning and coordination of all the centre's research activities and research communication and outreach with all external stakeholders (community, industry, academic institutions, government, etc.). Responsibilities include managing the health of the dairy herd to ensure profitability, developing gold-standard animal care and husbandry procedures that include the latest animal welfare knowledge, and overseeing training to all staff and researchers in such procedures. Further responsibilities include the management of a research technician, non-permanent student workers, research students, and managing the research activities undertaken by UBC faculty at the DERC, including overseeing data collection. This position ensures that the Centre is in compliance with the applicable UBC policies and the various enactments, federal and provincial regulations, guidelines and legislation that fall within the purview of this position.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Dairy Centre Director. This positing works closely and collaboratively with the DERC's leadership team (Director and the Business Operations Manager); LFS Faculty Operations and Dean's Office personnel and other UBC units (e.g. UBC Animal Care and Clinical Veterinarian) related to the day to day running of the Dairy Centre, resolving issues pertaining to the use of animals in research and their care and advising researchers and staff on regulatory and institutional requirements for conducting research at the Dairy Centre.
Working in a dynamic and complex environment at the Dairy Centre in Agassiz, BC, the AHWR Manager will assist and support the centre's Director, in close collaboration with Business Operations Manager. Interacts with faculty, government officials, industry, local community, international visitors, and other groups and graduate students visiting the Centre. Represents, along with the Business Operations Manager, the Centre and the Faculty to First Nations, the local community, other academic institutions and to the local, national and international dairy community.
Work Performed
Forges strategic linkages between academic initiatives, industry and community partnerships by coordinating research activities and participating in meetings with local and national representatives, and where needed aid in writing grants, drafting reports and proposals.
Oversees research activities performed at the Dairy Centre, and facilitates the implementation of project proposals, work plans and timelines for research at the centre, ensuring the integration into the day-to-day operations
Promotes dairy education and research activities to the broad community (international, regional and local audiences), working with the
