School’s Out Assistant

We are seeking a School’s Out Assistant to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the wellbeing of our children and families in our community.

Under the direction of the Team lead the School’s Out Assistant provides various activities that promote physical activity, healthy eating and nutrition, positive personal development, and wellness to support elementary and primary school aged children and families in our community. The School’s Out Assistant will also engage in community relations activities to supporting clients and the community.

**This is a part time position working Monday - Friday 2:00pm-5:30pm with full time hours available on Pro-D Days, Spring Break and Christmas break.**

**What you'll do**
- Working under the supervision of the Team lead, the School’s Out Assistant will instruct and participate in a variety of physical activities aimed at engaging students in fun, recreational and life-long learning objectives.
- Provide a healthy snack to all participants within the program guidelines accommodating all dietary restrictions. May be required to prepare snack ensuring dishes are washed afterwards as needed.
- Respond to the individual needs of children and establish stable and consistent relationships with each child and their families/caregivers.
- Foster self-esteem, problem solving and conflict resolution skills in children.
- Supervise the children and guide them in their physical, social, and emotional development.
- Watch for signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring the problems to the attention of parents.
- Provide positive role-modeling for child participants and volunteers to the program.
- Ensure that the health and safety needs of the children are met, and all health and safety issues are dealt with immediately and appropriately.
- Ensure the program is varied and of interest to the children.
- Cleaning and tidying of the facility and ensuring the safe storage of equipment.
- Ensure program materials and activities reflect cultural variance of program population.
- Maintain the confidentiality of information obtained during professional dealings with children and families.
- Respect cultural and social differences and allow for different parenting styles and values.
- Ensure any suspected illness or disease is reported to the Team lead.
- Administer First Aid and initiate the appropriate emergency response as required.

**Other Duties**
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

**What you bring**

**Qualifications**
- High School Diploma or GED required. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.
- Responsible Adult Certification or willingness to obtain is required.
- FoodSafe Level 1 required.
- First Aid Level 1 required.
- Experience working with children in a childcare facility is considered an asset.
- Experience working with and engaging children is considered an asset.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

**Cultural Competency**:

- Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.

**Preferred**
- Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
- Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
- Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Good writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
