The Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) is a dedicated non-profit organization focused on enhancing the lives of animals and connecting caring communities in Oakville and Milton. We provide shelter, care, and a range of support services for approximately 2500 animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership through education. **What Would You Do?**
The Animal Care Attendant is an integral part of the shelter and is responsible for providing all aspects of care and support for the animals in the care of OMHS. Working closely with the Registered Veterinarian Technicians (RVT’s), the ACA will ensure that the care and welfare of all animals and the shelter are maintained in accordance with OMHS expectations and protocols.
Key Responsibilities for this physically demanding position include but are not limited to:
- Assist with the care of animals during the summer influx
- Provide clean water and fresh food to the animals on a daily basis
- Clean and disinfects all dishes, etc. used to feed and water the animals
- Clean and disinfects all cages and assigned rooms within the shelter on a daily basis
- Remove animal feces on a regular basis and clean area
- Wash floors within the shelter including hosing down of outside kennels and walkways
- Responsible for laundry daily including; folding, putting away and disinfecting tubs at the end of each day
- Remove garbage and recycling to proper disposal bins outside of the shelter daily
- Restocking of supplies
- Provide environmental enrichment, socialization, and physical activity (dog walking, etc.) to the animals within the shelter on a daily basis
- When required, may receive animals brought in by APS or the public and log all necessary information
- Monitor the health of and observes the temperament of animals; reporting any odd or disconcerting behavior(s) to the RVTS’s
- May occasionally be required to respond to public enquiries in person or over the telephone
- Regularly patrol the donation bin and organize and store kept items
- Pick up shelter supplies and donations (using a company vehicle) as necessary
- Additional duties as required and/or assigned
**Qualifications and Experience**:
- High School Diploma and/or College as applicable
- Ability to lift 50LBS maximum; repetitive heavy lifting of objects daily
- Must be reliable; ability to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays
- Valid G license with a clear Drivers Abstract
- Clear Criminal Background Check
- Shelter experience is an asset
- Understanding of care and husbandry for cats, dogs, and small animals
- Canine behaviour knowledge an asset
- Strong communication, organizational and teamwork skills
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability and comfortable handling animals with varying temperaments
- Flexible and adaptable approach to changing situations
- Demonstrated written & oral communication/interpersonal skills
The role also involves a degree of physical activity, including lifting animals of various weights, prolonged standing or walking, and the ability to work effectively in noisy environments, as well as adapting to any other situations that may arise.
