Project: Moving Beyond Money and Macronutrients

The goal of this project is to establish if the burden of food insecurity among older adults meaningfully changes if we do not rely solely on economic measures and expand our definition to include perceived, systemic, and biological drivers that influence their relationship with food choice and acquisition. If inclusion of these additional factors results in meaningful change, how does this difference influence program delivery and our understanding of the issue. This will be explored by gaining a deeper understanding of i) the correlation between nutritional risk and food insecurity in older adults; ii) the physiological, psychosocial, environmental, attitudinal, and socio-economic factors that shape food choice and acquisition; and iii) the ways that community-based programming and services can more effectively support a holistic approach to health, well-being and continued engagement for older adults experiencing recognized and unrecognized food insecurity. The first phase of the work, which has been completed included in-person surveys, focus groups, and interviews in congregate older adult settings. In the second phase of this work, which you will be working on, we will use this information to support project development, evaluation, and delivery. There is a possibility of part-time contract extension after the year has elapsed. This contract position will provide project support to the principal investigator to assist in carrying out this program of research. It should be noted that this process is iterative and will change based on the identified feedback and needs of the community. This role requires you to meet people where they are at and be mindful of treating at-risk/vulnerable persons with dignity and respect.
