Research Assistant, Mitigating Phosphorus Losses From Soils to Spring Snowmelt Through Soil Amendments

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

**Position Overview**:
The research program that the research assistant will be involved, focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of different soil amendments in reducing phosphorus loss to snowmelt from agricultural fields. Research will be conducted by PhD and MSc students in the laboratory under simulated snowmelt flooding and in the field. The Research Assistant will help PhD and MSc students with soil and water sampling, cleaning glassware, soil processing (drying and grinding), and soil and water analysis. In addition, the Research Assistant will help maintain the laboratory documents (safety data sheets, protocols) and keep the laboratory clean and in good order.

**Duties**:

- Prepare equipment and materials for research.
- Assist in soil and water sampling and analysis
- Assist in experimental setup with simulated flooding experiments
- Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation.
- Assist in the acquisition of research materials and supplies.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- Completion of ENV 1600 (Human Environmental Interactions) and ENV 2603 (Environmental Sustainability) with a minimum of A- for both.
- Experience in working in a wet laboratory.
- Microsoft office (Excel, word).
- Familiar with using UV spectrophotometers, pH meters, centrifuges.
- Experience in soil and water sampling and analysis.
- Use of laboratory equipment that is routinely used in soil and water laboratories.
- Comfortable standing or sitting in a fixed location for considerable time when doing laboratory work such as weighing samples, analysing samples, operating equipment, and working in cold environments e.g., taking samples from the cooler or freezer.

**Condition(s) of Employment**:

- **Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.**

The period of work will be from **June 23, 2025 - December 31, 2025**and the estimated total hours of work will be **200-300 hours**.
