**PURPOSE**:Reporting to the Sul’hween Program and Nursing Manager and under the day-to-day supervision of the Kitchen Supervisor/Cook, the Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking traditional foods and hot lunches for Ts’ewulhtun Health Centre Elders Program and other Health Center related programs and events. This is a full time 35 hour per week permanent unionized position that works primarily on site with some local travel required.

**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**: Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $23.02-$24.42 per hour ($41,896.83 - $44,439.16 annually).

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Carry out food preparation and packaging for meals on wheels for Elders program participants as per Food Safe guidelines
- Carry out food preparation for community events and other department activities when requested
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, storage and organization in the kitchen as per Food Safe and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) WHMIS and other applicable quality assurance and safety standards
- Support the Kitchen Supervisor in the planning of traditional and balanced meals that accommodate the various programs including special dietary needs
- Assist in ordering food and supplies through distributors - Assist in dining hall set up of tables/chairs etc. for special events as needed
- Assist with dishwashing as needed
- Attend staff meetings as required
- Work flexibles hours as required
- Other related duties as required

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:_**(please attach all required documents)**_
- Certification through a recognized vocational institute or school as a cook
- 1 -2 years’ experience in a kitchen setting providing meals on a rotating basis
- Experience working within a First Nations community is an asset
- Ability and willingness to undergo formal culinary arts training
- Valid certification in Food Safe, WHMIS, CPR and First Aid Training
- Criminal Record Check (C.R.C) with vulnerable sector check is required
- Valid BC Driver’s license and reliable vehicle

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:

- Time management with ability to multitask different tasks simultaneously
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to provide lunches to varying sizes of groups of people
- Ability to operate kitchen related equipment
- Ability to stand for extended periods while preparing foods and cooking meals with the occasional requirement to lift heavy kitchen equipment
- Knowledge of safe food storage and handling practices, methods and techniques
- Knowledge of specialized diets and nutritional requirements
- Knowledge of local language, culture, customs and traditional food preparation
- Knowledge of Hul’qumi’num language an asset
- Regular exposure to heat, humidity, steam and food fumes
