Small Animal Control Technician

Join Planning and Development Services for the 2025 summer season The Small Animal Control Technician will assist in the coordination, planning and delivery of Strathcona County’s Problem Wildlife program to the general public, including private and public land, industry, and commercial operations. The positions are focused on the control of a variety of pests including wildlife.
**Responsibilities**:
- Assist with the control of problem wildlife within the parameters of the Agricultural Pests Act, the Wildlife Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
- Assist and advise on control of small problem mammals on private and public land
- Provide customer services including accurate technical information to the public, other jurisdictions, consultants/contractors/developers and other departments
- Assist in surveying for various diseases and pests within the parameters of the Agricultural Pests Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and proceduresEducate and provide current information to landowners regarding best management practices and biosecurity options to prevent the spread of diseases and pests
- **Qualifications & Skills**
- Attending or completed post-secondary education in an Agricultural or Environmental field with courses in wildlife biology; two years related experience is preferred
- Knowledge of small mammal biology and control techniques
- Knowledge and familiarity with the Agricultural Pests Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
- Effective customer service, public relations and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with diverse groups of individuals and the ability to deal with residents in challenging situations
- General computer proficiency and the ability to learn department specific software; experience in GIS is an asset
- The ability to work self-sufficiently in field conditions that include inclement weather and remote rural areas
- Current Standard First Aid is an assetA Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) and Firearms Safety Course
- **Conditions of Employment**
- Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Successful passing of a Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol TestAbility to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
