**Working for the Department of Surgery**
**Position Summary**
Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Pl), Dr. Greg Korbutt, Professor and Scientific Director, Alberta Cell Therapy Manufacturing Facility (ACTM), the Research Team Lead oversees the day-to-day operations of the research lab. This includes supervising and training, technicians, graduate students, summer students, research associates and post-doctoral fellows. The Research Team Lead works with a high level of independence, plans research activities, performs high level complex research activities, develops and implements new laboratory procedures, maintains laboratory inventory, analyzes and interprets results, and prepares manuscripts for submission. The incumbent ensures compliance with the University's policies and procedures when preparing or conducting research administration contract management, and risk management. The Research Team Lead also provides Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) support in the Alberta Cell Therapy Manufacturing Facility (ACTM).
**Duties**
- Provides day to day guidance, supervision and assignment of duties for staff and students.
- Assists with recruiting activities for staff, students and trainees, and tracks performance for communication to the Principal Investigator.
- Supports the Principal Investigator by being the first point of contact in the lab, and communicates lab needs and issues with respect to personnel and equipment.
- Administrative duties including purchasing of equipment and supplies, monitoring expenses, reconciling grants and records management.
- Develops and updates SOPs, experiments and research protocols, preparation of internal and external documentation including ethics approvals, drug exemption, import permits.
- Ensures lab equipment is in working order, troubleshoots issues and ensures adherence to maintenance processes.
- Supports Health & Safety protocols and prepares Hazard Assessments.
- Research duties; contributes to the transition of cell production methods to GMP production, plans and carries out independent research, implements, develops and troubleshoots experimental protocols in collaboration with PI and lab personnel.
- Provides Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) support in the ACTM Facility.
**Qualifications**
- Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience working in a research environment including supervising and instructing lab users.
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in experimental design, analysis and trouble shooting.
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in cell and islet biology, physiology, immunology, molecular biology and transplantation.
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience involving histological assessment of tissues and cells, islet isolation, primary cell culture, molecular biology, microscopy, and ELISA.
- Experience with the University of Alberta's administration, policies and procedures.
- Experience with the University of Alberta's laboratory health and safety regulations.
- Experience with the University of Alberta's online portals, such as ARISE, CHEMATIX and HSLAS.
- Strong verbal and written science communication skills for effective manuscript writing, abstract writing and presenting to research groups.
