Learning Support Specialist: International Students
Full-time, 9-month contract

This position offers some flexibility in FTE, and part-time employment can be considered. The role will be
evaluated at the end of the term, with a possibility for extension to a long-term position.

As part of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) the Learning Support Specialist provides direct
support to students to help them succeed. The specialist will work with students individually or in groups to
identify ways students can improve academically, provide tools and support for students who are adjusting
to university life, assist faculty in proactively helping students succeed, and is mindful of the unique skills
and challenges that may be faced by students with disabilities, mature, Indigenous students, International
Students and ESL learners. In addition, the International student specialist provides coordination of the
development, promotion and provision of international student support to King’s students, staff and
faculty. The Learning Support Specialist shares CTL administrative support services contributing to the
efficient and professional operation of the centre.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**

Duties of this position will include but are not limited to:
- Provide direct learning supports to international students through one-on-one and group tutoring.
- Provide expert advise to faculty about how to better support international students.
- Support student success and retention by providing consultation and instruction on the academic
- transition to Canadian University Education.- Assist student life staff to ensure international students feel welcomed to campus and connected to the
- supports offered.- Collaborate with faculty across the institution to establish academic writing expectations, identify
- students at risk, and harmonize academic enrichment opportunities with assessment standards.- Promote services of the CTL for international students through participation in orientation, classroom
- visits, use of social media, development of a web presence, and other appropriate means.- Plan and organize Learning events for international students.
- Build a supportive community for international students that helps them support each other.
- Promote services of the Writing Centre through participation in orientation, classroom visits, use of
- social media, development of a web presence, and other appropriate means.- Support the delivery of University 150 modules and the Education 211 course
- Maintain familiarity with current research around university learning and student needs
- Maintain confidential reports of services provided
- Supervise student workers and tutors as needed

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Bachelor’s degree required. B.Ed. or masters preferred.
- Education specifically related to effective writing.
- 1-2 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of student learning styles and how to motivate and prepare learners for university
- education- Knowledge of international student experiences and the supports that help these students flourish
- Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Self-motivated; able to handle change positively.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to prioritize workload and determine daily priorities for assignments, projects, meetings and
- appointments.- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the

ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees
and the community.
- Understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) including instructional technology, instructional

techniques, assessment and evaluation, and learners with disabilities.
- A mature and expressive faith commitment to Christ as Lord, demonstrated in a Christ-like attitude.
- A clear understanding of and commitment to The King’s University mission.

The King’s University follows a standardized salary grid. The salary range for the position is $55,700 -$67,700
/yr dependent on qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefit package, pension, and generous
vacation and time off are provided.
